C N Red
I know this doesn't go here, but interesting and wanted people to see it. They do talk about the football program, be it in not a very flattering way. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/otl/news/story?id=4242983 Link to comment
knapplc
So let me get this straight - ESPN has a prominent story on Nebraska and Tom Osborne that paints the state, the school and Osborne himself in stereotypically unflattering ways? KNOCK ME OVER WITH A FEATHER!!!!!!!!!! Link to comment
GI56
Terrible article- gives way too much credence to anything that Donahoe and Jordan said. Who do you trust, Osborne and Manning, or the stories of two disgruntled ex-students who were removed for violations. This part of the article was really terrible: "If Tom Osborne knew of all the NCAA violations that the wrestling coaches had broken, he'd probably fire the Nebraska coaching staff," Donahoe said at the time. "I know of probably five different NCAA violations they've broken." Then near the end: When "Outside the Lines" followed up with Donahoe in May on the contention about NCAA violations he made so emphatically seven weeks earlier, he appeared to have developed a bout of amnesia, saying as he smiled and laughed, "I said that? I must have been on drugs or something. I don't remember that. I must have been doing some kind of drugs." Obviously there's no reason to believe anything Donahoe or Jordan said. Link to comment
Eric
Does espn think the longer the article the better? I'm not reading all of that Link to comment
C N Red
I just put the story up. I put no credence in what donahoe or jordan are saying. I just thought it was news worthy to put on here. As far as I'm concerned when you are a scholarship athlete especially you are representing your school in everything you do. Porn is just not looked upon favorably in todays society, especially in a conservative state. Is Porn any worse than MIP, DUI, assaults? Every person has their own views, but I do feel alcohol related things are looked upon as more acceptable than Porn in society, right or wrong I don't know. Link to comment
huzkerbob
Is it just me or didn't that skank Mellissa midwest shoot some nude photos while she was a student at UNL? Different standards for athletes and students I guess. I doubt this was the only reason for them getting the boot, and would be severely disappointed if that where the case. I mean look at what FB players are getting away with, multiple DUIs, that's fine. Drunk and disorderly, that's cool. Resisting arrest, OK. Sexual assault allegations, sure! As long as long as you can get them dismissed. Caught in the same car as someone with pot, of course not! Posing for a gay web site, Oh GOD no! Not at Nebraska!!! Link to comment
knapplc
huzkerbob, I don't think I understand what you're getting at. Melissa Midwest wasn't an athlete at UNL. Comparing her to the wrestling guys is pretty weird. And maybe you're not aware, but Lincoln has a large and thriving gay community, per capita one of the largest in the nation. Yeah, there are ultra-conservatives here, but we're a pretty tolerant bunch overall. I will guarantee you that if our star volleyball player poses for Playboy while a student-athlete at Nebraska she'll get kicked off the team. There's no double-standard because this was a gay porn site. Link to comment
HuskerTrucker
ESPN ESPN ESPN Do you really ever expect anything better from them...they are Husker Haters for God's sake...!!! Link to comment
Jeremy
Ultra-Conservative State? Right. That's why we elected a Democratic Senator and one of Nebraska's 5 electoral votes went to Obama last November. Ultra-Conservative my foot. If anything we're closer to the middle, because I remember pretty clearly seeing the Phelps Klan in Lincoln with signs that said 'God Hates Nebraska.' Outside the Lines really seems to be trying to mix politics with sports. These kids were clearly in the wrong with no regard for how they represented the University of Nebraska or themselves, and this report really harps on the whole gay web site thing - as in those backward redneck homophobes kicked the poor kids out, and for no other reason. It's pretty clear that isn't the case. The biggest irk for me, though is that this report or attempted expose on Husker athletics almost makes the assertion that crime only happens within the Husker Athletic Department. I wonder how long the series would go if they looked into USC, Oklahoma, or a host of other big-money schools. Nebraska's not perfect, but I don't remember anyone claiming we were. Link to comment
