QB Race

As for TMart and Green not being able to throw, if they missed receivers last year, it isn't necessarily a function of them not having accuracy. When the game is moving as quickly as it does for a young qb, they may be moving from receiver to receiver and having to get rid of the ball the moment they spot the open guy thinking the rush is coming. With as many plays as are in the playbook, I bet under game pressure it takes a guy a while to remember where all 5 receivers are exactly, so when you finally see a target, you rush the throw. Both of these guys could have made huge strides in this department over the summer and through fall camp. Being comfortable out there makes a big difference!

I believe Martinez will really surprise people this year. He has the best arm, the quickest release, the best throwing motion and is the most athletic of the others.

Whole-heartedly disagree.

Lee has the best mechanics of any of our quarterbacks that we have seen. Unless Martinez drastically changed his throwing motion since spring ball, Lee is still the better throw of the three.

Mechanics are great, but i want a guy who knows how to play.

Lee stared his WR's down last year like crazy. you can pull that against crap teams cause there is a reason they are a CB on a terrible team. but games against Texas, that staring your WR wont work.

Lee has a terrible QB IQ.

If you think Lee stared down his receivers far too much, then I daresay you will not be impressed with Martinez this year against the better defenses. If we had to choose a pure passer for our first game, I would pick Lee in a heartbeat.

Green was actually the worse passer we had last season in term's of staring receivers down.

Personally, I don't think Lee has terrible QB IQ. I think Lee just had his confidence shot last year which put him into bad tendencies.

That is the difference with Martinez tho. He wont be sitting in the pocket, he will be moving and throwing outside the pocket. It is harder to read a guys eyes when he is scrambling towards open field. That forces DB's and LB's to move with him, making it a bit more difficult to sit and read routes.

I agree that Lee lost all confidence, but what is to say he will have any this year?

One of the worst things you can do is stay status quo when something isnt working. I think Lee might be right, but why not give Martinez a shot and lets see what he does.

Green showed us he isnt a better option than Lee.. and i think Martinez will show us the same thing, that Lee is most likely the right fit, but lets see.

Martinez can't break it down all of the time though. He is going to have to learn to stand in the pocket and make throws. Our offense will require that of him. That said, he is not our most viable option in the passing game. If we needed a pure passer, Lee is the obvious choice imho.

But, if Martinez's ability to make plays in general is worth the risk of his inevitable turnovers, then I say start him.

Same goes for Green. People aren't talking about Green, but Watson said he had an unbelievable camp.

I really don't care. I just want it to be 6:07 p.m. this Saturday.

Take this with a grain of salt.

I planned on eating at Buffalo Wild Wings for lunch after class, love that place. :koolaid2:

I parked on the top floor of the P Street parking garage to put my book-bag and my laptop in my car before I headed down for lunch. I noticed they were going through starting lineups on offense. I was specifically looking for #3 #5 or #17 to show up, but I was a little too late as they went to the defense.

I figured maybe I missed it, or I was too late, or they never put it up. I was thinking the later.

After I was done eating, I went back to my car, I looked over to my left at the jumbo-tron again. I noticed they were going through starting line-ups like usual for a second time today.

I made sure I stayed until I saw the defense again, just to see if anything had been changed or added and right before the Blackshirts showed up, I saw #3 Taylor Martinez appear.

Again, not guaranteeing anything, take it for what it's worth, take it with a grain of salt, but this is strictly what I saw.

I only had one beer to for my meal. :thumbs

I will support the staffs decision to start whoever until they prove otherwise they are not worthy of a start.

Unless Taylor Martinez leaves the state tomorrow he is the starter.

the only issue i have with tmart starting is that this offense is wanting to be conservative, run the ball and let the d win the game. but there will be a few points this year that neb will be down and need to sling the ball around. I dont think you can just go to the bench and say hey lee go win this one for us. then bench him again for a few games until we are down late in the 4th quarter again and need him to win it for us. secondly our o-line isnt the athletic line you need to run the inside/outside zone blocking to be successful at zone read option. tmart may be a stud at running this offense but teams like texas are going to put 9 in the box knowing he cannot throw the ball. my prediction if tmart is the starter all season is 3 losses. in which with the safer bet of lee there is a legitimate shot at going 13-1 14-0.

Tmart starts 1st quarter

green 2nd

best of 2 gets 2nd half

I really don't think that's the case at all. Remember what Watson said about TMart after the Spring Game:

“He has a skill set that, honestly, you can’t coach. He can put his foot in the dirt and go. He’s an instinctive runner. If something breaks down, he can make something big for an offense and can hurt a defense.”

If they're putting TMart into the game, it's because they think he can move the offense, plain and simple. They know how close we were to three more wins last year, and they're definitely not going to go conservative on the offense. If anything they're trying to make it more potent.

I don't know if any of you were watching the Royals last night, but they had Corby Jones in the booth for an inning talking about Fox Sports' upcoming football season and stuff. Well, they asked him who he was picking in the North and he said that his heart said to pick MU, but went on to say that it's going to be VERY hard to beat Nebraska. He said that he knows that we hadn't settled on a QB yet, but from what he knows, we would go with Martinez and went on further to rave about him and how great of an athlete he is and blah blah blah.

Anyway, I thought it was interesting to hear him talk about him, it sounded like he'd been perusing these forums.

I think it makes sense to have Martinez start against WKU. If the QB race is as close as they say it is and he has a legitimate chance at being our starter for the year, then having him start would benefit us most. Zac Lee already has plenty of experience and having him start would be of little benefit to him, at least much less then the benefit Martinez would gain by starting. Playing in mop-up duty is a competely different animal to starting the game. If Martinez/Green don't play well, it will then be much easier to fall back on Lee then vice versa.

Heh....I keep reading this exact prediction everywhere. I'm not trying to be mean but I just have to say.....

1. Like with a Tmart run threat offense, we can't come back from behind? Who says so? Also, who knows? We could even score a couple of TDs in the 1st half with Tmart vs a decent team. Wouldn't that be shocking? :wtf

2. You realize our WCO under Callahan (for 4 years) was 0 - 19 when down at halftime? We were "slinging the ball all around" but it never helped us win games we fell behind. Maybe that's just another reason we're running like a scalded dog away from the WCO?

3. Since you mention the Texas game do you realize Z. Lee led NU to a grand total of "five" first downs vs Texas last year? Yeah.....five 1st downs for the whole bloody game. Gee, I wonder why we lost? But it's a HUGE mistake for another qb to get shot? Tmart at qb would do "worse"?? Really?

So, we're at three losses with Tmart or Green but 13 -1 or 14 - 0 with Lee because....well, "because".....oh, I don't know.

Hey, with full respect I gotta go with Bo on this call.
