"Updated District Response to YouTube Video

The Greece Cenral School District has been touched by the outpouring

of support for Karen and we share the country's outrage over the

behavior displayed on the videos. We are deeply sorry that Karen was

subjected to that kind of treatment.

Based on our

internal investigation, and the interviews conducted by members of the

Greece Police Department, we have identified four Athena Middle School

students as participants in the incident. Certainly the behavior of the

students on the video is a clear violation of our district's Code of

Conduct and will not be tolerated. Disciplinary action to the fullest

extent appropriate under New York Education Law will be taken against

all involved. However, as we stated yesterday, it is not appropriate for

the district to discuss the specific disciplinary consequences that

will result for any individual student.

I need to stress that we

have a specific process that we must follow before imposing discipline

on students. Discipline for public school students in New York State is

handled under specific procedures set forth in the New York Education

law. In the event that a district is seeking a suspension of more than

five days, the district must prove the student's violation of its Code

of Conduct in a due process hearing before a hearing officer. If the

student is found guilty, the hearing officer makes a recommendation for

an appropriate period of suspension to the superintendent of schools.

Each case is determined based upon the actions engaged in by the student

as well as consideration of a student's prior disciplinary record.

As

is shown by this unfortunate incident, bullying is not a new issue to

those who work in schools. The Greece Central School District has a

strong bullying prevention model that includes a district response team,

training programs for staff and students including the Olweus Bullying

Program, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports and a Bullying

Reporting Process. In March, we also hired a special counselor to train

all staff in bullying prevention models. In fact, she is holding a

previously scheduled training for administrators as we speak.

The

behaviors displayed on this video are not representative of all Greece

Central students and this is certainly not what we would like our

students to be known for. We have worked very hard to educate students

on the damaging impact of bullying and will continue to do so.

We

have received thousands of phone calls and emails from people across

the country wanting to convey their thoughts. People are outraged by

what has happened and they feel the students should be punished. While

we agree that discipline is warranted, we cannot condone the kind of

vigilante justice some people are calling for. This is just another form

of bullying and cannot be tolerated.

We all need to take a step

back and look at how we treat each other. It is our job as educators

and parents to teach children and lead by example. We encourage parents

to use this as a springboard to begin a dialogue with their children

about bullying, respect and consequences. As a school community, we will

continue to take the lead in bullying education and we encourage all

students and employees subjected to bullying and harassment to report it

as soon as it occurs and to take a stand if they are witness to

bullying in their lives."

Is that link a "tamed down" version? The way the local shock jocks were talking about it this morning, I expected much worse.

However...I would be MORTIFIED if my 11 year old had done anything like this..He's probably the most empathetic person I've ever met. The guys on Holmberg's Morning Sickness were saying that the woman's son had committed suicide a few years before, and the kids were saying stuff like she was so fat and ugly, that her family would kill themselves to get away from her.

They went on to say they'd probably have the offenders clean out bed pans in an old folk's home, or other sorts of community service, or maybe sit the kids down with their grandparents and re-watch the video together.. (I actually like this one).

Knapps situation with his parents brought back some skeletons of my own..I was considered the "goody two shoes" of my neighborhood, but when I was 15, the neighbor kids talked me into having a party while my folks were in Miami.

They of course came home a night early (durring the party) and found bottles of sloe gin staining our oak floors, several couples occupying our beds, and me with a Jack Daniels/Michelobe beer buzz..swaying to try to stay in a proper sitting position after my guests left..asd my mom went from crying to laughing at me trying to appear sober..(I still don't know which one felt worse).

For almost all of my life before then, I wasn't ever sure if my Dad would kill me some day for no apparent reason, and the question on everybody's lips at school the next Monday..WHAT my parents were gonna do to me..And me explaining it being the worst feeling that they did do..They said that they would never be able to trust me again.

That hurt...Especially when the neighborhood bully kept saying, "Is that all"?..That HIS parents NEVER trusted him..But it was really important to me.

My Dad would bring it up one other time while he was helping me look for my 1st car a few months later`...I got my revenge after a company Christmas party later on that year.

I am hesitant to say that my kids will never do something like this because you just never know. I believe that my wife and I had have built a foundation of respect. My oldest is 10 and if I found that he was responsible for something like this I would physically take it as far as I could 'legally'.

I would then have him humilate himself. It would be for a long duration. How....I don't know, but you should never treat another person that way. My blood boils watching it.

At middle school, spanking is out. Using the "lost my trust" card would work for me, but that is how I raised my son. Not being allowed to be around the other three cretins would be in there. And an apology and community service in a nursing facility.

As far as the school. 6 month to 1 year suspension. and they would never see the inside of a school bus again.

I can't begin to put words to it. The punishment? Mandatory sensitivity training classes for the next three school years (instead of regular school). This is total parental failure. I can't fathom what I would do if it was my kid because it just wouldn't happen.

I understand that there are bad apples out there but where were the good eggs? Nobody stepped in to help. I find that almost as disturbing as what these little soul less turds did. Give the bus monitors tasers and don't question how they use them.

It's pretty tough to go against a mob. Very few adults would do that, so expecting children to do it is not realistic. I'd like to think they would, but...

It's not really anything more than what happens when a group of 7th graders outnumber an apparently defenseless outsider.

Grade 7 is the notorious age group that is reviled among school teachers because at this age kids have developed the ability to use foul language and form social groups but has typically not developed conscience enough to be considerate.

Its nothing new or that extravagantly different except that it was caught on video and went viral.

I'm not sure this is necessarily a parental failure either. Maybe it is, but I'd rather not jump to that conclusion. For all we know these kids have really good parents who are way more pissed about this than any of us. I'm sure these kids will likely grow up to be decent people. We've all said and done things as children that we deeply regret later in life. If you say you didn't, you're probably lying or in denial. It's part of growing up.
