Huskball
There are numberous reports that Assistant Coach Ben Johnson is leaving to take the same position at Minnesota. He is a Minnesota native. Ryan James @RyanJamesMN53m Ben Johnson expected to be the next coach named to the staff but its not official yet. That's been the buzz all week. It would be a good hire Nam Huynh @n_huynh1h New #Gophers assistant Ben Johnson is A native of Minneapolis. 31 years old. Has bachelor's degree in sociology from Minnesota in 2005 Robin Washut @RobinWashut1h Reports are #Nebrasketball assistant Ben Johnson has accepted position on Rich Pitino's staff at Minnesota, just waiting to be finalized. Provided this holds up, who do you suppose Miles will get to replace? Do we try and get Chin Coleman back? (As that is one of the reasons he left, he wanted to coach) Does Eric Strickland get his chance? Anyone else? Who could we get (realistically) Also, Johnson was the lead recruiter in Smith who has about a week before he can sign his LOI, should we be worried? I wouldn't think so as Minnesota has showed no interest in him thus far. Quote Link to comment
Red Tape
Big loss. I have faith in miles to find a good replacement. We still need to fill Coleman's shows too, right? Quote Link to comment
Comish
Probably too late in the process, but an earlier decision could have been an opportunity to pick up an assistant with an on-going instant connection to a big man. However, I'm guessing Miles is more of a big picture guy. I am a little worried about how the Smith verbal hangs on, especially since it appears that Minny's recruiting class is jumping ship. bball_backer
Not sure if one year experience is enough in Miles' eyes, but hopefully it is and he brings Chin back. Quote Link to comment

You think Chin would be interested in making a "lateral" move back...? I think it's possible... Miles is the guy who gave Chin his first real chance at getting into D1 coaching/recruiting. Chin also helped Miles get into the ears of some good AAU players out there from his AAU days Quote Link to comment
ADS
1. Let Johnson leave 2. Call Ron "Chin" Coleman 3. Offer full time gig, and nice salary 4. Steal all Chicago area recruits 5. ??? 6. Profit Quote Link to comment

But I wonder if the proximity to Chicago helps mitigate the difference between B1G and Valley from Chin's perspective....? Quote Link to comment

flatwaterfan
Sad to see Coach Johnson go, but I understand the draw back to the alma mater. I thought of Strickland, but Chin never occurred to me. I think he's a long shot though. Whoever they hire, I have faith that Miles will get a good one based on his previous hires. Quote Link to comment
flatwaterfan
Maybe they should go after Vince Taylor. As an x-gopher assistant he knows the big 10 and should be a good recruiter based off the athletes they had. http://www.gophersportsguides.com/page/show/258814-assistant-coach-vince-taylor Quote Link to comment
