Excluding coaching changes, what repairs are needed?

Maybe the answer is contact at practices ... until we get key players injured in practice and it is Bo's fault.

At some point, players have to take some responsibility.

How would contact fix 4 unforced turn overs?

That's what I said in the second post of the thread.

I don't know if it is contact at practices at fault, there was very little contact in the 5 TO we had today.

Then whats needed, in your opinion?

I know what's needed, ball security. I just don't know how to fix it.

I know how to fix it. You run 1 miles of bleachers for every turnover. You do 100 pushups, 100 sit-ups, 100 dips, 100 pullups ... for each offense. You do this in game 1 of the season. You increase this by one mile and 100 reps throughout the season. You coach like Herman Boone. "How many feet are in a mile? 5,280 feet! You pick this ball up and run every one of 'em! You're killing me, Petey! You're killing me!"

Bo needs to go "old school" on this crap. This isn't "year one" of the Pelini Era. This lack of discipline has been the "hallmark" of every team. It does not change. If TM was in ... he would do the same thing. When these guys are freshman ... they make freshman mistakes. When they are seniors ... they make freshman mistakes. It never changes.

really that's your answer.

If I were Bo, I would be scouring the country for coaches who are considered authorities on ball security. I mean, I would call every number in my rolodex asking for recommendations. If I could identify a couple of guys who fit that description, then I would bring them in for a few days this offseason and have them put on a clinic for my coaching staff. We would go over techniques, learn some drills, figure out how to hammer home to the players the importance of taking care of the football on offense and special teams.

During practices, I would have GAs, interns, whoever out on the field and their one and only job would be to keep an eagle eye on offensive and special teams players during drills and scrimmages. If they saw any signs of poor ball security, they would then and there pull that player out no matter who it is, tell them what they were doing wrong, and drop them on the ground for some pencil rolls.

If Bo could get that one problem fixed, it would drastically improve the fortunes of his teams... the last six years might have been a lot different if we hadn't spent most of them at or near the bottom of the FBS in turnover margin.

when did ball security become a exact science that you need to go get specialists to teach it? the teaching of ball security hasn't changed in sixty years. and I love how you think that the coaches don't preach this every practice.

I'm sure they've preached ball security until they're blue in the face... and where is it? Either we're the unluckiest/clumsiest team in Division 1 football, or what they're doing isn't working. This is far and away the number one most critical problem that needs to be fixed. Consulting outside expertise seems like a pretty good way to try to improve what they're doing at this point, at least to me.

Haven't really read through the thread, but in my opinion, the only thing that needs to be repaired that will thrust is into capability of winning championships is the team and program's psyche.

Nothing more or less than that. Get everyone dialed in the way they should be mentally and emotionally, and we are there.

Have thought the same thing as the OP, other than firing (not sure if that would help) what can we do.

a) Identify a dedicated ST coach. We are non-existent in the return game and have been for some time now.

b) Look into establishing an identity on O. We are too multiple. Not in formations like TO ran, but multiple in that we do nothing well.

c) Look at other higher echelon schools and see how they practice. Adopt these. Maybe we practice "soft".

d) Look at our S&C program. This year we seem hit with the bug. Perhaps it is stretching or recovery. Yoga, Pilates, I have no idea

e) Really examine the use of old balls. On tv they look slick.

g) Hire a full time recruiting staff like Bama. We have the money. Spend it.

h) Do we have room to hire a ST/QB coach. We could really use a QB coach.

i) If we plan to use the option, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Get great at it and it will pay dividends. If we won't get great at it, ditch it. Timing becomes a huge issue.

Ditch the Up-tempo O. It only hurts us and our D. It is about as effective as our punt returns.

Up-tempo O is not the problem. Its when to go up-tempo is the problem we have. If the offense is taking care of the ball and we are moving the chains effectively, up-tempo offense works to perfection. Wears down the defense and doesn't give them much time to set up the defense they want to run. If you continuously go three and out and turn the ball over, its not helping the D out at all and that's when you need to slow it down. That is what we need to figure out, when to go fast and when to slow it down.

We have seen how effective it can be when it works by looking at the opposing defense huffing and puffing in the fourth quarter.
