Becks comments

Recommended Posts

It's comments like this that bring situations to a head. Pelini is good enough on his own in creating a thin skinned, toxic, us-vs.-everyone atmosphere around the program. You don't have a good relationship with the fans, Beck?

Well, I got news: When you stop needing miracles to beat teams like 7-loss, zero-conference-win Northwestern, or 56-scholarship Penn State; when you stop leading the nation in fumbles year after (after year); when your vaunted, veteran offense (fifty points a game, man, you heard it here first) doesn't go scoreless in the second half of the UCLA meltdown; when you don't implode against doormats like Minnesota, or surrender easily winnable games like MSU because of systemic incompetence; in short, when you start putting a product on the field befitting your salary and position at this university, then you and your players will have a relationship with the fanbase largely free of serious criticism.

Until that day comes, shut. the f*#k. up.

P.S. And don't make me laugh about players "counting down the days" until they're done. Good. Get rid of that cancer. Cut it out now, before the Iowa game. Don't even let those non-hackers put on the jersey. You signed up for big boy football at a big boy program. No, I don't excuse a-hole fans who are out of line, but get real. They exist in every major fanbase of every major program and cannot be avoided. I've seen other message boards in comparable situations: it gets absolutely vile. But CFB is show business. It comes with the territory. When you sign that LOI so you can get the free housing, the free food, the free gear, the free education, and all the perks of being a genuine celebrity with a shot at an NFL career, best brace yourself to handle more emotional storms than random idiots chattering on Twitter.

Playing an injured Taylor Martinez, then losing him for the season probably didn't help things.

The choice of Tommy Armstrong vs. Ron Kellogg III has not been obvious, but between them they've lost one game and had some moments we will recall as semi-legendary when we all calm down.

We won on the road against Michigan and Penn State. They were gritty wins. We used to call that character before we decided nothing matters without a CCG.

We've got Ameer Abdullah. He's having a season worthy of the Husker Greats, several of whom played on 9 - 3 teams. I'll watch Kenny Bell and Quincy Enunwa any day. No matter what they might Tweet, they play like ballers.

The defense hasn't been helping the offense the past couple seasons, but appear to have turned things around dramatically in the second half of the season.

And now imagine it's last August and you were told Martinez is out for the season, along with our three best offensive linemen and Jamal Turner. What's your prediction for the season, armchair genuis? Better or worse than 8 - 3?

So you know, there are a lot of fans out there who should probably shut the f•ck up, too.

Sure, but they're never going to. EVER. The real problem is that the coaches and players don't know how to deal with it other than make it an "us-against-the-world" culture, and that doesn't work when things are going well and the fans are behind you.

"Us against the world" will work to motivate people in short spurts but not long-term, because the motivation comes from other people, and not from within. Even Alabama will concoct some ridiculous "us-against-the-world" narrative heading into a big game, but those games are truly won back in June/July. Us-against-the-world doesn't work in June/July, or in Fall camp, when every fan base thinks they're going to go undefeated and the media doesn't have access and isn't writing about the coaching staff being on the hot seat.

During those summer days, which is when great football teams are formed, the motivation to be great has to come from within.

When are these coaches going to look over in the basketball arena and watch another coach teach them how to get the fans and media on their side?

Bo wouldn't even have this job if it weren't for a large number of fans liking him and wanting him back.

It's just sad he could never figure that out.

what's sad is that your comparing the basketball program to the football program, not even close to being the same monster.

Hmmm, I thought he was comparing the head coaches abilities to make friends and influence people. But, I guess you are still right, there really is no comparing Pelini and Miles. Yin and yang.

The relationship would not be toxic and confrontational if Bo had a different outlook on it.
