Conference Move Struggle

Recommended Posts

We have now been in the Big Ten for a few seasons. Even tho we have reached the conference championship, it has been far from easy.

Changing conferences has to be hard to deal with. Playin against different styles of teams, recruiting a different type of player. No doubt, we have been bruised up in the black and blue conference.

HOWEVER, when Penn State switched to the big ten didnt they have a struggled transistion? Im not old enough to remember but thats what i have heard from certain people so please correct me if im wrong.

Nebraska has struggled to find an offensive identity the last few years yet still manage to be competitive and even reach a conference title. I realy believe there is a reason for hope for the future of nebraska football. Im not big into Doom Porn and am not an excessive kool aid drinker. I just enjoy crackin open a bottle of budweiser and watching my favorite team play. Our defense looks very promising and if tommy armstrong can continue to progress (dudes a freshman) we look to be scary next year and 2015.

Just trying to keep things in perspective. Conference changes can never be easy. Miami hast been to fantastic since the big east days. Some do alright (a&m, mizzou) but mostly its a difficult transistion. Just some food for thot.

As always go big fn red.

I think on D we are looking bright the next few years. Continue to recruit to plug holes ie safety in 2015 so that we start to develop depth. 2014-2015 can be very special on D IMO.

Offensively, we need to find an identity. I like a smash mouth with play action pass. We try to be to multiple IMO. This multiplicity bites us in the a$$ every season ie Beck goes all pocket QB, Beck fails to recognize that misdirection is acceptable etc.... We truly do nothing well on O. We are average in execution in most phases. Get great at some scheme and run it into the ground. I think this also allows us to better recruit players who are the best fit for this "narrow" scheme instead if guys who are ok in "multiple schemes. ie instead of a road grader OL with decent pass pro, we get a line full of OL who have decent pass pro, decent foot speed, decent run block etc....... Just like our current system, we recruit "jacks of all trades, master of none"..........

I still call that BS. You recruit to win period, the best players. You recruit to your system, not to the conference. You think Bama would struggle in the Big 10, Stanford, Oregon, LSU, Georgia, South Carolina. I think not as year after year the good teams win, no matter what conference they are in.

Such a lame excuse for me.

I have always considered this the most bizarre of excuses. I would put it right up there with the mean media and Twitter wars as the most unconvincing. The things that have primarily hurt us...

  • Inability to maintain intensity and focus for 60 minutes
  • Dropped balls
  • Predictable, fearful playcalling
  • FUMBLES
  • Questionable conditioning, and possibly related...
  • Injuries
  • Relying too heavily on an explosive RB at QB

All of these things are universal to football. They are equally important to the Big 12, the Big 10, the NFL, high school football, eight-man football, Canadian football, Arena football, the XFL, etc.

Didn't seem to bother Missouri.

Yep. And that's why I think the role it has played in our struggles is overstated. We're undisciplined, make too many mistakes and shoot ourselves in the foot far too often. We have no identity on offense or defense. These would be issues regardless of what conference we were in.

Beck has failed to adopt an identity, he would love to emulate Oregon, but we don't have near enough quality, speedy athletes...so we continue to be a smorgasboard of an offense, known for going 3 and out way too damn much....with no recruiting goals to meet any identity that i can see.......anyone?? i have complained about this all year, we continue to be anonymous as a offense that is known for any succinct ability, although with AA's numbers I guess we are now at least a run first offense, but like Burkhead, we are a one man show at running back..

I agree with all but the bolded, but I digress. I think that the conference change may be a little bigger deal than others, but bottom line, it shouldn't have mattered that much. We went to a lesser league.

I think the bigger issue was a change in recruiting philosophies, especially in regards to the type of defensive linemen we were recruiting. Guys like Randle and Guy look much different than the guys we got in the last 2 classes.

I think Bo finally woke up on recruiting. He knew coming from LSU what was required, but felt they would line up for him like the do in the SEC. I think, hope, pray he has learned that lesson. Some on here feel he has, still remains to be seen, but we have seen improvement.

this +10000

I guarandamtee you if we had 1/2 this stuff 1/2 addressed this year, we'd be playing for a natl championship....particularly this year.

Watching MU last night, who does not play a "BIG 10" brand of football, they would kick any teams ass in the Big 10.we used to play the big 10 brand of football back in the 80's and Tom decided to change to more athletic players after getting tired of being embarrased in the orange bowl...and started winning NC agaisnt all kinds of styles....

I ll bet the the turnover margin between Mizzou and us is ...30-40? 30-40!

just get middle of the road on that stat and we maybe beat MSU and maybe beat OSU last night....

the whole recruiting for a conference style is crap.recruit to your schemes and play them well and nobody touches you...just my humble opinion
