Nebraska Third Worst State for Taxes

Recommended Posts

According to WalletHub.com, Nebraska is the third worst state in average state and local taxes paid, ranking #49 out of 51 (DC included). We pay 36% more than the national average - an "average person" pays about $9450 per year in taxes. When you adjust for cost of living, it gets a little better as we rank #37. They looked at real estate tax, income tax, vehicle property and sales tax, sales & use tax, fuel tax, alcohol tax, food tax and telecom tax.

No surprise really and it won't change anytime soon either. If you compare us with neighboring states we as a state lack income from natural resources that help reduce the tax burden. Our closest comparison to what we lack would be Iowa and as you can see from the chart they are only a few spots better then us. If you don't have coal, oil or natural gas then your "natural resource" is the people who live there.

It's a good thing that the cost of living in Nebraska is as low as it is: no state makes a bigger jump up the rankings than Nebraska when the metrics are adjusted for the cost of living. A few states make bigger jumps down, however: Hawaii, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire all fall more than 13 spots when adjusted for cost of living. I think Nebraska's cheaper cost of living makes it possible to tax more, but hear about it less.

Isn't Nebraska a pay-as-you go state? I mean, Nebraska doesn't rack up large deficits, right? That's one reason Nebraska might look worse in the present. Because its not selling the future down the river with a bunch of debt.
