So yellow card = penalty shot?

/ignorant

A foul called on the defense, in the 18 yard box around the goal, is a penalty kick. What the referee though happened was the defender put a hand on his shoulder and pulled him down. What actually happened was his hand briefly touched his shoulder and the guy took a dive.

That penalty was really disappointing.

I was talking to a guy from Mexico today and he said a few teams play pretty indifferently in the group stage knowing they'll advance, mentioning Brazil and Argentina specifically. Brazil, he said, are happy to keep it to a draw, and pounce on a score here or there if the other team slips up. If they do happen to lose this way they'll just take it out on the next team. That's some kind of confidence.

Brazil is by far the most talented team this year. They have some youth and inexperience that may end up being their undoing, but they probably can turn it on and burn their group teams. Mexico has looked paltry.

Aerodynamics of the World Cup's New Ball

Pretty interesting, even if you're not into soccer

A traditional ball experiences maximum knuckling at about 30 miles per hour, which is far lower than the typical speed produced by a professional player. Jabulani, a much smoother ball, has maximum knuckling at 50 to 55 miles per hour, which is exactly the expected kicking speed, so it's totally expected that World Cup players noticed the problem back in 2010. The increased roughness of the new ball, Brazuca, drops the critical speed for increased knuckling back down to 30 miles per hour again, so it shouldn't come into play for this year's World Cup.

Offsides is such a stupid rule. I can see them calling it if a guy is just standing on the other side of the field, but when you get closer to your goal it should be cut out like hockey. The offense should not be penalized for the defense not knowing where the offensive guys are on the field.
