Turn Back the Clock -- If Interweb Message Boards Existed in 1994

With the 20th anniversary of the 1994 National Championship team being celebrated this week, I thought it would be fun to do a post-game by game breakdown of each game from 1994, if interweb message boards existed back then.

 

Fall Camp - After coming so close to Osborne's first National Championship, do we think the Huskers can get back to the MNC game? How will the team replace Calvin Jones on offense? How will the team replace Trev Alberts on defense? I love Frazier's ability on running the option and his leadership, but he completes less than 50% of his passes. Can we depend on him to make a pass when necessary? Frazier was also the QB when NU lost at Iowa State. Our recruiting rankings have been pretty average, how are we going to compete against the teams from the south? How are we only ranked #4 preseason?

 

West Virginia - Wow, I never expected Nebraska to blow out West Virginia like that. West Virgina is overrated, they will struggle the rest of the year. What happened to our offense in the 2nd half, we only scored 7 points? Frazier threw 2 interceptions, he has to be more careful with the ball. I thought Berringer showed some stuff at the end of the game, I wouldn't mind seeing him get more PT. Did you guys see that tall skinny freshman running down on kickoff coverage? I think his name was Winstrom. Our next game is against Texas Tech on the road, is anyone else worried about a Thursday night game on the road?

 

Texas Tech - Man, two straight games for NU where we played pretty well. Don't get too excited, Texas Tech and WVU are bad football teams. Is anyone else concerned about the offense starting out slowly? We only had 14 points at halftime. NU scored 4 TD's on plays longer than 30 yards, are we too dependent on the big play? Frazier was 5 of 15 passing, this is not going to cut it the rest of the season, we need a better passing threat. I liked Childs' TD run, I think he needs to get more carries. How did we drop from #1 in the polls after this game!!!!

 

UCLA - Guys, we finally played a complete game. I think we may have a national championship contender. What is with the defense giving up 21 points? Again Childs has a big game in limited action. He needs to get more carries!!! The fullbacks had over 100 yards rushing, does Osborne use the fullback enough? Abdul Muhammad only had 1 catch, is he getting enough touches?

 

Pacific - Nebraska shouldn't even be playing this team. Dollar Bill should be embarrassed. Did you guys see Berringer today? He was 8 of 15 passing, he needs to play more. He gives NU a true passing game. Did you guys see Turman in the 4th quarter? He was 3 of 4 passing, I wouldn't mind him seeing him as started in a couple years. Hey guys, I heard Frazier might be out for a long time. They are afraid he could lose his leg, and will never play football again. Why does this always happen to us!!!!

 

Wyoming - WHAT THE HELL KIND OF GAME WAS THAT!!! When is Nebraska going to get a real defensive coordinator? We can't be giving up 32 points to Wyoming!!!! Colorado is going to score 50 on us if we play like that. That game was basically a loss. The only reason we won was because their punt returner dropped the punt.

 

Oklahoma State - Man, the Big 8 is so bad. It's embarrassing the Oklahoma State has such a crappy team. The Blackshirts had a good game, but it was not a good team. Let's see them do that against a worthwhile opponent. Why is LP getting 33 carries? We need to spread the ball around and keep him healthy. Berringer only threw for 75 yards, when is Osborne going to try some deep passes. Oh crap, Brook suffered a punctured lung. He might be out a month. We are screwed!!! I have faith in the Turmanator!!! I saw Turman play in high school, I think he will do just fine next week. How are we going to beat Kansas State next week!!! Chad May is going to have a field day on us.

 

Kansas State - Was everyone else as nervous as I was entering this game? It was a nice win, but how are we going to win games with only 52 yards passing. Do Osborne and Solich even look at other RB's to play? Benning and Childs had 3 carries between them!!! Did you guys see Christian Peter messing with May under the pile? I thought it was funny, but one of these days that's going to get us a 15-yard penalty. Hey guys, I heard a rumor on why Jason Peter didn't make the K-State trip. His "groin injury" was due to him putting a piece of liver in the microwave and him trying to have sex with it. The liver was too hot, and he burned himself down there. HAHAHAHA!!!!

 

Missouri - Yeah, NU took care of business, but it was against another crappy Big 8 opponent. When is NU going to join a real conference? I think NU should look at becoming the 12th team in the Big 10. Once again, Childs averages over 10 YPC, he needs more touches!!! I feel bad for Turman, he started last week, and didn't get to play at all this game. What is wrong with Philips? He wasn't able to break off any long runs. We are going to get smoked by Colorado next week. They are just way too fast for NU.

 

Colorado - Holy cow!!! What a win for NU!!! Is everyone else getting plane tickets for Miami over New Years??? I don't think NU will need Frazier ever again the way Brook is playing. The Blackshirts were great against Kordell, but we still gave up 134 yards to Salaam. Is anyone else concerned about that? I know NU jumped out 24-0, but it would have been nice if NU was able to score more points in the 4th for some style points. Does TO lack a killer instinct? Once again, the backup RB's only get 8 carries. Does Solich even know they exist?

 

Kansas - I love blowout wins like this, but the offense only had 7 points after halftime. Why can't our backups produce like the starters? Finally Osborne used Berringer in the passing game. Brook should be the starter no matter what!!! Does anyone else think next week is a trap game? Do we remember our last trip to Ames?

 

Iowa State - Man, it really sucks that these games aren't on TV. It's so nerve-racking listening to the game on the radio. I was out doing some yard work and listening to the game on the radio and it was getting way too close for comfort. Why do we always play like crap at Ames? Why is LP getting 36 carries? There are other RB's on the roster. Nebraska can't let teams hang around like they let the Cyclones. I hate trips to Ames, It would be cool if we could play in other areas of the country, like Texas or Michigan or Ohio State. Have you guys seen what Barry Alvarez is doing at Wisconsin? He has Nebraska ties, do you think he would think about coming back to Lincoln if Osborne retires?

 

Oklahoma - Ugh, another bad performance by the offense. What is going on with our O-line? 50 carries for 136 yards is embarrassing. Tenopir needs to get those guys playing harder. Does anyone think that Frazier could make this team better? Berringer looks beat up out there. I wondered if they should have thrown Turman in there for a series or 2 for a change up. I thought OU was going to pull off some Sooner Magic again, and break our hearts. Great, now we have to go play Miami in Miami again. Why do we always get screwed in these bowl games? Is Osborne going to blow this one again?

 

Miami - HOLY CRAP!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT JUST HAPPENED!!! I AM SO GLAD FOR OSBORNE!!! I thought it was a mistake starting Tommy. I about broke my TV when Brook through that INT in the 4th quarter. Was anyone else nervous when NU had a 2-point conversion in the same end zone as the 1984 Orange Bowl? It's about time TO called the fullback dive, that play works every time!!!

Heading into that 1994 season, the mood among my circle was that 1994 was our year. We expected to vie for the National Championship again, and over and over we talked about how things "feel different" than years before. Even after losing to Florida State, the take-away was that we were the better team, we just didn't respond on the big stage.

 

I'm not saying we "knew" we'd win it all that year, but we felt like we had a chance.

 

Had message boards been around back then, the kool-aid would have been flowing heavily. And there'd have been the inevitable turds in the punch bowl. Those people don't go away because your team is winning. Check out any Alabama message board if you don't believe me.

The only thing missing is after the first 4 games, you need to complain that the backup QB didn't get reps in the first half when the game was still on the line. How how can we decide if he is ready to step in if needed unless we as fans see him when the game is on the line?

The mood definitely was that we should have been NCs the prior year and we needed to take care of "unfinished business". I believe that was the teams motto in the off season. They wore teeshirts saying that under their uniforms every game.

OMG...we only have three QBs on the roster? Our recruiting and roster management sucks. If TO hadn't ran off the other QB with his inability to get along with players. Actually, if he hadn't horribly mismanaged the roster so bad and given him playing time early in games, he wouldn't have left.
