Frostberg
Coach Riley wants to hire a Walk-on Coordinator. I personally think this is great. I think the key points this person should have would be: 1) Must have roots in Nebraska. This person needs to know what it’s like to grow up with the dream of playing in Memorial stadium. 2) Must have recruiting experience. Has to be able to convince the kids to give up a scholarship offer from other schools and walk on in Lincoln. 3) Must already have a good relationship with the Nebraska high school coaches (especially in Omaha and Lincoln). If the coaches are on board they can help convince the kids that Nebraska is the best place to be. I think we can lock down this state and make it hard for any outside schools to recruit here. What do you think about the key points? Ultimately I want to know who you think Coach Riley should look at. --- Sorry if there is already a discussion on this topic. I searched for it and could not find one. 2 Quote Link to comment

I'm not sure who would fit the mold here but if a kid getting recruited and offered a scholarship out of state and only being offered a walk-on spot at NU then this guy better be able to sell ice to an eskimo. Kiyoat Husker
While these are nice points, I think someone could be successful without #1 and #3. Try to keep an open mind. I'm sure Riley will find someone he thinks has what it takes to do well there. Quote Link to comment

BigRedBuster
As for #3, I agree other than the (especially Lincoln and Omaha). All the coaches already are going to be well aware of what is in those areas. Who ever it is, needs to have those relationships but he also needs to realize that there are people west of Lincoln too. Some of our best walkon/scholarship players from the state come from the western part of the state. I fully understand someone like Riley who has probably never set foot in this part of the country doesn't know or understand what is out here. But, put the right person in charge of walk-ons and they can also recruit the kid who every once in a while deserves the scholarship from this area. Something that I firmly believe is that this guy needs to understand the value actually in 6 and 8 man football as far as finding walk-ons. Is there always players there to get? No, but just because a kid played 8 man football, doesn't mean that can't translate to Nebraska as a walk-on. Something else I really don't understand. Since I graduated in the mid 80s, my small town has produced (off the top of my head) 3 scholarship players and at least three walk-ons. Now, two of the scholarship players were starters on NC teams. The other one is still playing in the NFL. One of the walk-ons was contributing until a back injury basically ended his career. The other two walk-ons are new and we will see if they do contribute. All that is from my small town. When I look around at the schools we compete with, in our immediate area, I can't even think of anyone from those schools that have gone there since the 80s. Why would one small town produce these kids and the rest not? I personally believe it has to do with the coaches have seen what can come out of here and the pay attention. It could also be that the ex players from here inform the coaches of what we have so they are more aware. I don't know. But, I hope the pipeline keeps going. Quote Link to comment

darkhorse85
Eric Crouch! This was my first thought actually. I'm just not sure he'd go for it and he'd need some OJT. Quote Link to comment

Count 'Bility
Doc Sadler That's actually a pretty good idea. Quote Link to comment
nuhuskeralum
I think Matt Vrzal would be great, he is active in the program, well spoken, likeable and familiar with the landscape of Nebraska and Husker football. I'm not sure Crouch has the personality to pull it off or not. Maybe even Foreman or Benning? Quote Link to comment
BigRedBuster
Doc Sadler That's actually a pretty good idea. I'm pretty sure being a head coach of a Div 1 men's basketball team probably pays better and is more in line with what he really wants to do than to be coordinator of walk-ons of a sport he has never coached or scouted.
