Hittin' the links: Golf talk

Well now that golf season is winding down here in NE guess its time to start looking at club sales to try and upgrade the sticks for next year. What is everyone looking at over the winter?

Call me Clark W Griswold, but IF I do get a holiday bonus, I'm going to upgrade my sticks. I've been very happy with my Cobras for the last 7 or 8 years, so that's probably what I'll get this round.

If you do get new clubs, get them fitted for you. I'm 6 feet talk, but I have LONG arms, so my clubs are actually shorter than a 'normal' six footer.

If you're gonna get them fitted for your height you just as well go the rest of the way and get them fitted for your swing too. Its a huge difference maker!

Where can one do that?

You can get fitted at almost any decent golf store. And in most large cities Golfsmith and similar places have simulators like the one on the golf channel that you can hit into to get a feel for how well you hit a particular club.

65 degrees out this afternoon. That's about as good as it gets for the Midwest in December. I felt mildly guilty when I took off to play golf at 2:00pm and left my wife doing yard work. I felt even more guilty when I got back at 4:00pm and she was just finishing up the leaves. So I got her a glass of icewater.

First hole, I hit a nice drive and pitch and was on in two, to within 10 feet. Three putted for a bogey. I actually struck the ball pretty well all day, considering I've played only once in the past two months. But I missed several makable putts. Putting probly cost me four or five strokes. Despite the putting woes I ended up with a 45 for nine holes.

Are you still playing the Vfoil blades?

Matters where you live. Some of the guys at larger stores are okay, but i'd pay a little more and go to a place with a golf pro with a lot of experience, and preferably where you're hitting balls outside off grass.

Naw. I bought a set of Bridgestone J40s, like below. They're easier to hit. I do love the look of the MacGregors. Mac makes some of the best looking clubs ever made, IMHO. They're not very forgiving though.

I prefer blades. They make you better.

Yeah, I played blades for quite a few years. I don't think the difference is as pronounced as most people would have you believe. Sure, they are a bit harder to hit. But it's not a huge difference. I think it's more of a marketing thing so club manufacturers will sell more clubs. /adjusts tinfoil hat

You hit the nail on the head. It's all marketing. "Forgiving" clubs only disguise mishits. They just take away the vibration. They don't magically make the ball go the right direction and distance when you mishit them.

Blades give you more feedback to improve your swing.

Anyone here play Tatanka yet? It's at a reservation casino near Niobrara, Nebraska. It just opened this fall, I think. I'd never heard of it until I saw an article in a golf magazine a couple days ago.

Will this next year. Only live about 45 minutes from it.

btw, The article was the cover story from a couple weeks ago. I don't think the article is on-line though. :dunno:
