Cowboys' Randy Gregory project features plan to bulk him up and mentorship from a Hall of Famer

Gregory, on the other hand, will be the wager that tests the Cowboys right now – on multiple fronts. It's clear that despite his immense talent, he is coming in as a project. Physically, he looks more like a basketball player now than an every-down defensive end. He needs to add a significant amount of weight and keep it on, and that's no guarantee. One scout said Gregory's weight issues reminded him of former Atlanta Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney, a player who was known to eat four massive meals a day, and a huge plate of pasta before he went to bed. And that was just to keep weight on.
There's a video interview with Randy as well.

Just in case: :sarcasm

Maybe all he has purchased up to this point are baggies and now with a NFL paycheck he can buy a sack.

Neat little breakdown of some of Randy's plays. I know there were some questions about his first step since he wasn't usually asked to burst upfield in Bo's defense.

Look closely at this picture, immediately post snap. The ball has not yet made it through the center's legs. Almost nobody on the field has moved. TE John Phillips has fired out. DeMarcus Lawrence has lifted his hand. Gregory is taking his first step.

Here the ball is just arriving in the hands of QB Kellen Clemens. Gregory (circled in blue) is nearly a yard across the line of scrimmage. The WRs are just beginning to step.

Randy is able to control a lot of linemen because of his crazy long arms and grown-man strength. A lot of people thought he was too "light" for the NFL, but don't confuse body weight for overall strength. Gregory is plenty strong, especially for his speed.

That was a great read. Sounds like Gregory is turning some heads down in Dallas.

I listen to a Dallas-sports radio station on the interweb, and one of their hosts is very knowledgeable on the NFL. He is very high on Gregory, and thinks that Gregory can do a lot of things on the field.

That said, rookie pass-rushers don't tend to put up huge sack numbers, so a season with only 5-7 sacks would still be considered a good rookie season for Gregory.

One common theme coming out of training camp is the praise for his "heavy hands". Then there was this little nugget from Marinelli:

Never thought I would hear the words "Randy Gregory" and "playing strength" together, but that's exactly what Rod Marinelli said about his rookie defensive end post-practice. Marinelli went as far to say that he believes Gregory could be an every down player in this league sooner than later, but for now they are happy to continue to work him as a rusher. What I have noticed the most about his game is his willingness to take coaching and apply it. Whether it has been on his pass rush technique or playing the run, there are things he is doing in these practices that he wasn't doing at Nebraska.

Honestly, I think he could be an every down DE this year, but I don't think that will be necessary. They kind of have an embarrassment of riches at end with Hardy, Lawrence, Mincey and Gregory.

This season would be a great opportunity to develop some, get his weight up, and get his feet wet in pass rush packages.
