Recruiting effort & this staff

Pulling things from a couple of threads here.

 

As I've noted previously, I think NU's been a little behind this year so far. They're building a core in the '16 class based on four months of work, vs top schools that have been recruiting top prospects for years. There's also been the disadvantage (self-imposed, perhaps) of a bare-bones Junior Day earlier this spring.

 

So that's somewhat understandable. But it would be disappointing if things don't rev up eventually. With that in mind:

The "Who's Next?" Thread:

 

With BRW starting tomorrow it's a good time to revisit this thread. Seem to be a few triggers that might be pulled this weekend but I'll go with Stille first. I think the coaches push him, although he doesn't need it, to start the weekend off right.

 

Simmons, Pope and Dismuke could follow suit.

Things are really kicking into motion. This is going to be a very visibly busy -- and very LOUD -- few weeks of recruiting.

Yeah, I agree - the effort is reving up. But I hope folks don't expect that effor to result in a class of just four stars, at least this year. I see this as a foundation-building year; the start of the process of building relationships.

 

Now, I definitely expect to see it pay off in the 2017 class.

I can't quote any paid material from Rivals... but through all the recruiting services and experts at all of the sites, kids are giving feedback that they really feel better connected to this new staff than they did the old staff. We have a ton of top 250 players we are pursuing that have reciprocated interest right now. Coaches that seem to be making the biggest impact so far?

Coach Williams - connects well with kids. They love him. They respect him and want to play for him.

Coach Bray - connects well with kids. They love that he played the position at the professional level and he gets them.

Coach Cavanaugh - personality sticks out. Expert at what he does.

Coach Stewart - same stuff.

 

I have heard a lot of guys say they respect Langsdorf and kind of see him as this expert who coached Manning and the Giants. He doesn't seem to be much of a talker, but seems to woo his guys with his ability to see things and teach.

 

I haven't heard anything on Banker or Hughes but some of the DL recruits say they relate better to the new staff than the old.

I would think Riley can be a great closer. Has to make a great impression with parents and guardians.

Obviously it'll take a few years to gain enough knowledge to really analyze the staff's recruiting prowess.

 

As an outside observer, it seems these guys are much more engaged in the recruiting process than the previous staff ever was. From using social media as a recruiting tool (which is huge IMO), to the satellite camps, it seems like they've hit the ground running.

 

The effort is there. That's all we can really ask for, I think. Whether or not that effort will be good enough remains to be seen, but for the first time in years we can honestly, and with a straight face, say it's there.

Agreed. If nothing else, they are at least using all time and avenues available to them to help recruiting.

I'll be more impressed with their effort and methods when they actually start getting results that are at least on par with the previous staff. There is some hope that the QBs they've got were "under the radar", but so far the most impressive recruiting accomplishment I've seen by this staff was holding onto most of Pelini's recruits.

1. The highest ranked recruit for 2016 committed to Pelini first. They have managed to hold on to him but they haven't recruited anyone new that is of equal footing as Rairdon based on recruiting services.

 

2. It doesn't take that much effort to offer 260 players in a year. So I don't get the " X coach is putting in work! He is a machine!"

 

3. Not one verbal commit that we are aware of from the first BRW. That to me is disappointing.

Were they "under the radar" at the time we started recruiting them? Yes. But they are not now, as one was offered by Oregon and the other is a Elite 11 finalist.

- 5.6   Chase Claypool - from Canada. Big bodied receiver. Interested in Nebraska. Plays: WR or gains weight and becomes TE

- 5.6   Marquez Stevenson - loves coach Williams and has connected well with Bray too. Plays: WR

 

TE's - 1 commit

- 5.6   Austin Pope - we were his first major offer. Coming to BRW this weekend. Plays: TE

- 5.6   Jack Stoll - deciding between Texas and Nebraska in the next couple of weeks. Coming to BRW this weekend. Plays: TE

 

OL -2 commits

- 6.0   Willie Allen - likes Coach Cavanaugh and Williams a lot. We have a shot if we can get him on campus. Plays: OT

- 5.9   Richard Merritt - likes us, keeping his options open. Need to get him on campus. Plays OG

- 5.9   Jauan Williams - likes Coach Cavanaugh a lot. Knows about the pipeline. Wants to visit. Plays: OT

- 5.8   Michael Eletise - just made his top 10. Has a relationship with Cavanaugh. Wants to visit. Plays: OG

- 5.8   Matt Farniok - has visited NU multiple times. Likes coach Cavanaugh. Nebraska and Iowa are sitting on top. Plays OT or OG

- 5.7   Tremayne Anchrum - attended BRW last weekend and loved it. High on us. Plays: OG

- 5.7   Scott Lashley - likes us. We need to get him on camps to make an impact. Plays: OT or OG

- 5.6   Alaric Jackson - under the radar recruit that has blown up. Need to get on campus to make impact. Plays:OT or OG

- 5.7   Connor Murphy - high on us but needs to visit.
