Recruiting effort & this staff

Recommended Posts

I'll be more impressed with their effort and methods when they actually start getting results that are at least on par with the previous staff. There is some hope that the QBs they've got were "under the radar", but so far the most impressive recruiting accomplishment I've seen by this staff was holding onto most of Pelini's recruits.

I think we can agree that more splash would be preferable, but I can also understand that it is a slow build to results.

To the specific points:

-it's been how many days since BRW? There might be commits forthcoming, or even ones we don't know about.

-those under the radar QBs are now an elite 11 finalist that Riley found before anybody else, and a dual-threat passer Frost & Oregon made a big pitch to swing but couldn't -- because Nebraska got there first.

This is no different than the past coaching staff. The difference will be if this group of coaches can close and deliver better. Being "in on a bunch of players" is every schools banner this time of year.

That's what I meant by saying there's hope there. If we snagged them while they were "under the radar" and they turn out to be great players, then the coaches have obviously done well. That can be hoped about most recruits that aren't four stars, but the Elite 11 camp and Oregon story do help give reason for hope in this case.

Doesn't seem like this staff will be taking that extended vacation through the summer like the previous one would.

Agreed. If nothing else, they are at least using all time and avenues available to them to help recruiting.

I'll bet this staff takes a long vacation during the summer quiet and dead periods just like almost any staff.

The utilization of social media beyond what our previous capacity was and addition of the satellite camps has me feeling we are headed in the right direction. We keep up this effort and have a good year with our favorable schedule and even the 2016 class might turn some heads.

Riley's reputation as an ace evaluator should be reason enough to give the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, I think he's very well regarded in this area. Other Pac 12 coaches were talking about how he'd always be getting the jump on finding guys, but just had trouble hanging on to them because the rest of the conference would follow suit and Westwood, LA, etc had better things to offer than Corvallis.

He's going to have to prove that he can get some good recruiting results at Nebraska, that is for sure. Effort's only part of the deal, but of course, it's June. So early.

If you look at the graphs comparing recruiting to on-field success (which is imperfect but give you an idea), OSU was one of the top schools over the last 10 or so years but they were right on the average line when you looked at the last five. So the potential is there but for whatever reason it hadn't translated as well recently.

So the last 5-6 years he produced results on the field that correlate very closely to his recruiting rankings. That hardly indicates elite talent evaluation. Hopefully though, we'll see results more like the earlier part of his tenure, when he did outperform his recruiting rankings for a few years.

Here's the caveat I'm holding hope for:

At OSU, Mike Riley was great at evaluating talent, played some great games for a few years, well above what people thought they were capable of. However, it's OSU - it worked for a few years, they were still OSU, oh well. Bigger schools realized what was happening, they started poaching, players realized that they could go to a bigger school and win more.

At Nebraska, if he follows the same route... he only needs to be "great at evaluating talent" for a few years. He needs to play some great games for a few years, and it's done - on the field success has been the only thing holding Nebraska back in recent years. Those couple of years, and screw evaluating - we'll see the cream of the crop wanting to play at Nebraska again. We get better players, and success only grows bigger.

At least, this is my hope.
