Planned Parenthood late term fetal parts sale scandal

. . . even though science shows a 20-month old fetus can survive and live a full life?

IT CAN?! OH MY GOD.

If you meant a 20 week fetus could you please show me an example where a 20 week fetus survived and lived a full life?

This is just one example of a UK fetus surviving at 21 weeks. You can do a search and find many examples. Of course with any early deliveries, it will take weeks in the nic-u before going home, but technology and medical advances have made this possible. I find it alarming that the UK even has a legal abortion limit at 24 weeks, while in the US we don't have any limits.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1021034/The-tiniest-survivor-How-miracle-baby-born-weeks-legal-abortion-limit-clung-life-odds.html

So you can't find an example where a 20 week fetus survived? Not even one?

I suppose you need to revise your claims then, eh?

Fiorina's remarks made it sound like PP is a harvesting factory for the brains and/or organs out of LIVE 20+ week old fetuses, which is absurd and patently false:

"I dare, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, to watch these tapes. Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking, while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.

Fiorina is wrong: Nobody watching the Planned Parenthood tapes would see those things. I know, because I recently watched the 12 hours of video that included all footage shot inside clinics.

The videos were produced by the Center for Medical Progress, an anti-abortion group that argues Planned Parenthood has profited from procuring fetal tissue for researchers. The videos do show Planned Parenthood officials discussing fetal tissue, sometimes in ways that are callous and jarring. But there is no moment where Planned Parenthood discusses procuring fetal tissue for profit, nor is there the scene that Fiorina describes....

So are you saying that you would support aborting a 20-week old but not a 21-week old fetus?

Actually, I think the record (and I'm not sure if it still stands) for the earliest survival of a fetus was closer to 22 weeks than to 21 weeks.

It's not my decision to make regarding whether a 20 week fetus should be aborted but apparently you believe that it is your place to do so. Perhaps we can compromise . . . you can choose to not abort 20 week fetuses and you can allow others to follow their own beliefs.

I saw a bit of it and got the gist. And this video is obviously put out to provide "shock value". But, for one thing, if you took the profit motive out of the deal--and much of medicine in general--it would probably cut down on any tendencies toward corrupt practices. But nobody's holding their breath on that one. And I reiterate, embryonic stem cell/fetual tissue research has been going on since the 70s with positive results in the treatment of diabetes and Parkinson's disease, for e.g., or neuroscience More proof of the hypocracy and pandering of right wing politicians on the issue is further shown here:

In the 90s......Significantly, Congress was spurred to action by sustained pressure by the research community and the support of key senators with solid antiabortion records, including former Sens. Robert Dole (R-KS), a longtime advocate for disability issues, and Strom Thurmond (R-SC), whose daughter suffers from diabetes..... https://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/tgr/07/4/gr070404.html

It doesn't get more 'rad' right than Dole and Strom Thurmond, "Good Ol' Strom":

On this day in 1943, a South Carolina woman named Sue Logue was executed along with her brother-in-law, George Logue, and a down-on-his-luck plasterer named Clarence Bagwell. The Logues had hired Bagwell to kill their neighbor, who had previously killed Sue Logue’s husband over a feud concerning a dead calf.

What makes this story interesting is that before Sue Logue’s arrest, she had been having an affair with an Edgefield County school superintendent named Strom Thurmond. Yes, that Strom Thurmond. Logue was a teacher in Thurmond’s district, and rumor has it that the two had once been “caught in the act” in the future senator’s own office. When police surrounded Logue’s house to arrest her, Thurmond — by now a local judge — even intervened in the standoff to ensure that she came quietly (no pun intended).

What makes the story even more interesting is that before Logue was to be executed, Thurmond rode with her from the Columbia women’s penitentiary to the prison which housed Death Row, and even managed to “get it in” one last time before his mistress was executed. Strom said that ''on the question of social intermingling of the races, our people draw the line.'' And, he went on, ''all the laws of Washington and all the bayonets of the Army cannot force the Negro into our homes, into our schools, our churches and our places of recreation and amusement.''

On race relations:

Strom said that ''on the question of social intermingling of the races, our people draw the line.'' And, he went on, ''all the laws of Washington and all the bayonets of the Army cannot force the Negro into our homes, into our schools, our churches and our places of recreation and amusement.''

Oh wait!

Six months after Thurmond's death, Essie Mae Washington-Williams publicly revealed that she was his daughter. She identified as African American, was married and had a family; she was a retired Los Angeles Unified School District elementary school teacher with a master's degree. She was born on October 12, 1925, to Carrie "Tunch" Butler (1909–1948), who had worked for Thurmond's parents and was 16 years old when Thurmond, then 22, impregnated her.

thurmond-daughter-inside.jpg

Thurmond married his second wife, Nancy Janice Moore (born 1946), on December 22, 1968. He was 66 and she was 22.

Ah, gotta love the Repubiklans and their commitment to, "family values".

____________________________________________________________________________________

As to the "intact body parts". Well, there's some ambiguity there: parts? Cells, tissues, organs? But from the PP charts provided above, abortions account for less than 3% of their work, and of those, "late term" abortions account for less than 1% of the 3%. And this is done in only very restricted situations, as in, there's a real and significant problem with the pregnancy, as in, the fetus has no brain, no kidneys, etc. (I'm beginning to think some of the Repubs miraculously survived the former situation). The way the activists and Fox Fascist News is portraying the thing is like there's an epidemic of late term babies being killed alive to harvest body parts, which is essentially a lie, and anyone engaging in such a is subject to libel suits which we might see coming st some point. I mean, most women who want an abortion do it relatively early in the process. The idea that there are hordes of women waiting around until they have a 20+ week old fetus in their wombs and suddenly decide they want an abortion is also a fiction.

Has Fox News allowed PP and/or physicans and/or women who have used PP on their show to give the "fair and balanced" view? Of course not, why would Fox--which is essentially a right wing, fascist propaganda bullhorn--want facts when they have little to no commitment to facts?

But let me play devil's advocate here. From the absolutist anti-abortion position, any woman and physician and organization/hospital engaging in an abortion at any time are subject to criminal prosecution, namely, premeditated, 1st degree murder. So, in this world, a woman and her doctor could be sharing adjacent jail cells for life or capital punishment. This is the logical conclusion, correct? I mean, they could conceivably get the death sentence for aborting a microscopic aggregate of a few amorphous cells. Is that what you want, really? How much is that going to cost the taxpayer? It's ridiculous. You do know, they are trying to cut down the incarceration rate these days.

It's never going to happen and the right wing can roll this issue out every election cycle like they've been doing for the past 50 odd years, collect lobbyist $ and pander to their Christian base, lose the battle once again, and fade off into the sunset like they always do saying, "well, we put up a good fight...", while they go off and let their daughters have abortions and fund stem cell/tissue research, etc.

I suggest the anti-abortionists to accept the advice of Pope Francis--and their favorite deceased Nazarene Hebrew socialist philosopher named "Jesus"--and "forgive" women who have had abortions, even if they don't need or necessarily want forgiveness.

At what point do we address the real problem? Unsafe SEX. If you are willing to risk the chance of becoming pregnant should you not have to deal with what happens when you do? Obviously extremes exist such as rape. However the vast majority of abortions are for women who willfully engaged in SEX with another. Once you are pregnant you shouldn't have the right to take a life because you don't want to deal with the repercussions of your actions.

Good point Hedley. In addition to killing a baby, there is the other argument that individuals shoudl take personal responsibility for their actions, and that its not ok to kill a life for a roll in the hay with someone you don't know and love.

So pregnancy as punishment? Forced birth because someone had unprotected sex is seriously some sort of medieval belief.

People have abortions for all sorts of reasons. You act like all of them are just "oops! teehee!" or something. How about if some sort of deformity develops? Or their socioeconomic standing suddenly changes? Or dad decides to skip town? What if the condom broke or it just happened to be that .1% of the time the pill didn't do its job? You don't know these people's situations, and it's frankly none of your business. And a clump of cells is no more a person than an egg is a chicken.

----

If you want to reduce abortions, support planned parenthood. Providing affordable and easy to access family planning does more to reduce unwanted pregnancies than anything else. This witch hunt against PP needs to stop.

At the end of the day, in the conversation of what we are focused on here, late-term abortion, you are still taking the life of a child that has a fully formed central nervous system, that can feel pain, etc.. If the fetus is capable of surviving at 21 or 22 weeks or whatever that threshold now is due to medical advances, or the baby is delivered at week 38 by the mother, if the father skips town, using your logic the mother should be able to kill the child in either scenario as that is an acceptable excuse.

That's awfully totalitarian of you. Apparently you don't believe in freedom and personal responsibility.
