Lincoln Atmosphere

In another thread a poster mentioned that the crowd seemed dead during the game, anyone else notice that?

 

I was in Lincoln for the game, hit up Sandy's (very packed before the game and a great atmosphere) hit up Brothers as the game started (pretty dead) and the Rail Yard after the game. Don't get me wrong it was a great time but there was kind of a weird vibe, it just wasn't at electric as it usually is.

That happens when you have this type of record. Most programs wouldn't even be able to fill their stadium.

I was at the game and I thought the crowd was juiced up to start, especially for an 11 am game. Then the offense kept stalling out and the energy was sucked out of the stadium.

The crowd was dead. Lots of people left midway thru 4Q.

The team was dressed as if it were in mourning, and the whole episode seemed to have fed into that premise.

 

I think the fans were still had a hangover from the Wisconsin game, where they shook the stadium.

11am game and the team didnt give us much to get hyped up about. Stadium started out loud. D got 3 n out. Offense stalled on first possession again. Then big QB run. And offense continued to sh#t the bed and just drained the crowd.

Lincoln, not just the stadium itself during the game, will be dead or certainly eerily quiet and subdued after a disheartening loss. In this case, it was not just the NW game that was lost but really the bulk of the remaining hopes for the season sailed away as well. Frankly, this loss was the roughest and worst of the year in my view. Any unrealistic hopes or wishes for something to be salvaged for 2015 were gone. The team played poorly once again for at least half the game. We just can't put together 4 quarters. I really can't remember the last time the Huskers played well and up to par for an entire game, start to finish. I'd think it might be in the 2000 bowl game against Tennessee. We played really well that night as I recall.

 

That is a bunch of games ago!! By the time you have gone through 15 seasons and all those long spells between January 1 and Sept. 1, you kind of lose the ability to get fired up and stay focused for a long Saturday pregame to post game party. Losing has always taken the wind out of the downtown party atmosphere. I was not there but I can imagine the bars were not even three quarters filled after the game either. It would have been pretty much a downer but not the usual kind of 'shock and dismay' but more the grumbling disgust feeling as the product on the field contiunes to suck. Let's face it: the Huskers are just not very good and are not playing very well. It is the fault of many things combining together - way too many years of subpar coaching, recruiting, over hyping, under performing, failing to strive for excellence, etc, etc etc. Whatever can go wrong, does! It will take the combined efforts of literally 120,000 people from the fans to the players and their friends and families, and the students and faculty and the merchants downtown , etc. Nebraska football was a phenomenom really. It is gone! It won't come back easily without a mammoth effort. It won't happen overnight or within a year or two. It is a complete rebuilding process. Many have written on this board and in the papers, etc that Nebrasks doesn't need rebuilt, it needs a good tune up! I say BS to that. We are facing a complete rebuilding from the foundation up. Many have contributed to its collapse and many will be required to remake it.

You can analyze a bunch of things..

I've been to numerous games and 11AM starts are the worst for "atmosphere". Trust me, I love the intangible electricity around Husker games, so I'm always trying to feel it. There's something about that 11am start that kills it.

I honestly get the feeling the the fans in the stadium have done their best to get at juiced up as possible considering the circumstances. They tried to will the team against Wisconsin, they tried again yesterday against Northwestern. They need something to root for and the team simply isn't giving it to them.

I was at 2 games this year. BYU and yesterday vs NW. The crowd did their job on BYU and started nearly as loud yesterday but the first TD by NW pretty well squelched it. After that it was only loud on 3rd down and as they completed many of them it kept getting quieter. I have never heard it as dead as it was in the 4th quarter. Everyone thought they were watching a horror show.

But the Huskers couldn't do enough to keep it rolling. For every good play, there was a letdown play. And now that people are pretty much expecting to get let down.....

They're starting to realize the futility of yelling "SWIM!" at a drowning man and that doing so louder will not make him do so.
