Why is Donald Trump a racist?

Hang on. Trump has a great relationship with The Blacks.

Seriously, the way he talks about minority groups when he's attempting to show how unbigoted he is should be enough of a hint, without him coming out and saying "Hey guys I'm racist."

Awesome job not judging!

Way to further the discussion.

Actually, I agree with teach. I thought Moiraine did an awesome job analyzing the situation without judging.

The point is that Trump deals pretty casually in racism -- enough to (apparently plausibly) pull back and say, "Woah, who, me? I'm just asking questions about the birth certificates, man. Many people are saying."

Do I think he personally has it out for Black people? No. But to think that's the threshold is mistaken.

Do I think Trump believes, for example, that laziness is a trait in Blacks? Well -- I don't know. It's dubious that he actually said that. It would not be inconsistent. Certainly it's something many people believe (don't kid yourselves, guys). And the guy with a past of being investigated for discriminatory housing practices, has he demonstrated empathy or understanding? Denounced any of that?

No. What he has done is cast race-based aspersions on others at his convenience. His campaign harnessed the worst in us, multiplying fears of foreign immigrants in ways the media charitably referred to as "racially tinged." His loud insistence on the overwhelming love and support he has from communities reveals a lack of of interest in their concerns and welfare. Yes, that describes many a politician. Few have been so unabashed, or had blind spots this significant relative to their times.

Trump probably doesn't think white people are a genetically superior masterrace. But he's probably pretty OK with the idea that this country and its institutions mostly belong to them, and is pretty comfortable with getting us "back" to the old days when diversity-blind norms ruled. If his transition team is any indication, America's next government will be a limited reflection of its enormous diversity.

It takes a real understanding, a continued effort at developing more of it, and concerted intention. These things aren't that hard but they are important. Trump shows none of those, nor the willingness.

Unfortunately, there are enough people in our country for whom the color of a person's skin is a decision-making factor. Those people need constant reinforcement that such behaviors are not OK. Trump does the opposite - he normalizes that behavior and thus perpetuates it.

There is a mistaken belief that a person must be overtly racist to adversely affect race relations. The opposite, unfortunately, is true. One must overtly oppose racism to combat it.

Again, though, Hillary Clinton is not going to be president. Supporters of her are not going to be president. Donald Trump IS going to be president. So saying "but the left..." rings pretty hollow.

Knapp hit the nail on the head. Trump's may not come out with any overtly racist policies. Apparently they've scrubbed that Muslim ban already from the platform. I have to laugh at the people that genuinely had their hearts set on that.

But he's not going to do much to make race relations any better, I'd wager. How could he? He's got a long and sordid history of doing the opposite. DJT is to me, the epitome of rich white privilege. I for one plan to try to actively counter the views he's carried with him past the finish line this election.

I mean the guy literally came out and patted himself on the back for his own bigoted attacks on the sitting President because he said he did the country the favor by getting Obama to release his birth certificate (he didn't, this is just the lens through which Trump views reality).

You're telling me THAT guy is going to be our great racial Healer-in-Chief?

Hillary neither started nor stoked the brother stuff. I think she's done a thorough job of directly and unreservedly repudiating it, actually. So have, I suspect, most of her supporters.

Racism wasn't much of an animus in the HRC camp, at least not this time around. Knapp makes a great point about overt rejection. On racism, the only controversy I see about liberals is that they do this too much.

Sometimes even that isn't enough. Race relations seem worse today than eight years ago. And I believe it's fair to say that Obama overtly opposes racism.

It makes me wonder what's in store for the next four years. :dunno:

The birther thing is stupid and Donald Trump was a birther which is also stupid.

However, the inconvenient truth is that it came from Hillary Clinton supporters. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2010/02/08/the-secret-history-of-the-birthers.html

Didn't read the ENTIRE thread, and copy/pasted this from reddit. Many of us will realize that some of them are stretches as far as strict definition of what is or isn't overtly racist, and some of them refer more to his supporters than to him himself, but you know the saying where there's smoke there's fire? Well in this case can we just admit that when there's a firetruck, with firemen, spraying firehoses, and the sky is orange, and there's lots of smoke, that there's actually a fire, and that it's okay to acknowledge the fact that there is a fire and that it's not just being used as a distraction from an earthquake a mile away, or that we are dismissing the fact that other fires exist in other places?

Okay, cool.
