Omaha-Husker
Came across this speech by former Republican VP Nelson Rockefeller at the Republican National Convention in 1964 I hadn't known about before. It is incredible how relevant these statements are to the current political climate. Also interesting to see him call out the John Birch Society in the same group of extremists as the KKK and Communists. The current state of the Republican party is essentially the completion of the goals that the Birch Society had when it was founded. Whole comment here and it is a pretty quick read, but is a worthwhile read IMO. https://en.m.wikisource.org/wiki/We_Repudiate_the_Efforts_of_Irresponsible,_Extremist_Groups The opening gives the jist, but the whole thing really speaks to ideals that a party worth supporting would hold and that the current party is so far away from. Quote "The Republican Party fully respects the contribution of responsible criticism, and defends the right of dissent in the democratic process. But we repudiate the efforts of irresponsible, extremist groups, such as the Communists, the Ku Klux Klan, the John Birch Society and others, to discredit our Party by their efforts to infiltrate positions of responsibility in the Party, or to attach themselves to its candidates." The time has come for the Republican party to face this issue realistically and take decisive action. It is essential that this Convention repudiate here and now any doctrinaire, militant minority, whether Communist, Ku Klux Klan or Bircher which would subvert this party to purposes alien to the very basic tenets which gave this party birth. A real leader of the Republican party wouldn't have answered "Stand back and stand by" when asked about the Proud Boys. A real leader may have shared a sentiment uttered over half a century ago by a former Republican. Quote These extremists feed on fear, hate and terror. They have no program for America - no program for the Republican party. They have no solution for our problems of chronic unemployment, of education of agriculture, or racial injustice or strife. 3 2 Link to comment
