Trump and His Wall

Moraine said: The big differences are that almost no one wants to ban guns and they kill a lot more innocent people than illegal immigrants.

Not to derail this thread, and this is all I will say about this here...

But guns don't kill people. People kill people. Guns are merely the tool used to do the deed, just like a:

knife

bat

car

your 4th grade, "participation" trophy from 1984, et al

One estimate how the wall saves tax payers $$s over the next 10 years.

Where do you find this stuff? I'm trying to get verification on the first allegation:

  • Each illegal is a lifetime net cost to taxpayers of $74,722

And I get nothing but alt-right websites. Where does this figure come from? Because if this figure isn't accurate, none of their "cost savings" calculations are accurate.

EDIT - found this on Politifact:

Trump said, "Illegal immigration costs our country more than $113 billion a year."

Trump presented this figure as a hard fact to make his case, and not as the rough, high-end estimate that it is.

The figure matches a 2013 study by a group that wants to reduce immigration, FAIR.

It’s uncertain how much immigrants in the United States illegally cost taxpayers, but FAIR’s data is largely based on broad estimates and assumptions. Another report by a conservative think tank pegged the amount at about $85 billion a year. Reports by pro-immigration or neutral groups have come in significantly lower, and other reports have been inconclusive.

Estimating the costs of illegal immigration is extremely difficult and produces dramatically different figures, depending on the source. Yes, there are costs. But Trump is selecting the highest of all possible estimates from a range that varies widely.

We rate Trump’s statement Mostly False.

Notice how he was initially saying the wall would be sea-to-sea, but now he's going back on that, saying there will be large gaps at natural barriers.

This thing has been a distraction since day one. Like, literally since day one - he mentioned the wall the day he announced his campaign.

Looks like Trump still doesn't know how to keep project costs down either.

The funds transfer would bring the total amount devoted to border wall construction under Trump to $18.4 billion.

Finally, Congress compromised to give the president $1.375 billion for “existing technologies” like “bollard fencing,” far less than the $5.7 billion originally requested by the White House.

No wonder Trump is the debt king.
