Also, is there anyone the Dems can pick that's "in tune" with the country? Based on polling, Bernie is the most popular national politician over the last couple years, but I'm guessing a lot of people will say he's not "in tune" with the country. Our country is so fractured and divided right now, I'm not sure an "in tune" politician is possible.

That's why I can't disagree with Romney.  Biden is too close to Obama, Sanders is a socialist, Warren hates capitalism, Clinton is Satan, everyone else is inexperienced, etc....  There will be an excuse for whatever Dem is put up and enough people will find a reason to re-elect Trump.  And a majority of Americans will hate it and the outrage will continue to create more and more candidates that are "out of tune"....

If you are thinking that you're going to find a candidate that isn't going to be campaigned against by Republicans, then your kidding yourself.  Every candidate SHOULD be questioned and campaigned against from the other side.

Find someone can relate with the majority of people in American, doesn't have baggage and can speak intelligently about issues.

There are people like that out there.

I don't think the economy will be strong in 2020. We're overdue for a downturn and would have been regardless of who was elected president. Add on top of that this trade war Trump pulled out of his ass and the tax cuts and I don't think things are going to be too rosy 2 years from now.

Agree. But has the DNC learned their lesson?

I guess my worry is that the "outrage" will lead to candidates further from the mainstream.  For example, here in Omaha Brad Ashford was beaten by Kara Eastmen mostly because Dems felt Ashford wasn't "left" enough.  Eastman will get beat by Bacon because she will focus on pro-choice, anti-gun, and higher minimum wage.  It will do a great job of rallying the democrats, but there won't be enough of them to be successful.  These aren't policies I disagree with, but it won't relate to Nebraska moderates.

That is the concern.

That is my concern as well - not for Trump but for the nation.  2020 is still light years away politically speaking.  How long can the stock market stay at the current levels wtout a major correction. It is over due.  If you have a 401k you have to know that it is coming.  Tax cut and spend(use to be tax and spend Dems was the Repub 'Alamo cheer' now it is 'tax cut and spend' repubs holding court) will come to bite us soon as well.  And if the Euro countries, Canada, Mexico, China rally against our tariffs and they are/will - who knows the depth of the impact that will have.

I think our allies and China will do everything in their power to convince us to make Trump a one term president. Mexico has basically already admitted as much by saying they're aiming tariffs at states which voted for him.

I don't think the country is going to vote for someone in the center. Just look at who's being elected as Republicans - they are WAY off of mainstream.

I don't think a Dem candidate that appeals to the right and pisses off the left is going to go well - they just tried that with Clinton. Grated, Hillary was a bad politician, but I don't see many voters on the right (or left for that matter) voting for an establishment candidate no matter who it. But I think a non-establishment, populist candidate has a chance from either the left or the right.

People need to stop using Hillary as an example of where on the political spectrum doesn't work.  Her loss doesn't have much of anything to do with her policies.  He was the singular worst candidate the Democrats could have put up....NOT because of policy.

We also need to see where health insurance premiums end up two years from now. It's going to be hard to blame Obamacare when Trump was declaring it dead a couple months ago.

Canada will probably make the same targeted tariffs.

Romney believes Trump wins :ahhhhhhhh in 2020 based on 2 things:

1.  strong economy

2. Dems pick someone out of tune wt the country -

Another big influence is what happens to congress in 2018. People like the balance where one party doesn't control both congress and the Presidency.

If you don't like the Hillary example, look at the entire Republican field for 2016. None of the center-right candidates were competitive.

And I think Hillary lost both because of her personality and her policies. Business as usual wasn't a winning set of policies. It's why I think Biden would struggle in the general against Trump.
