Europe: The next recruiting frontier?

On Monday, Rutgers became the first Power 5 program to offer 6-foot-6, 250-pound defensive end/tight end Julius Welschof. Don't be discouraged if you haven't heard of him but don't be surprised if your favorite team is considering following Rutgers' lead.

Welschof hails from Germany and he's on a summer vacation of sorts. He's been hitting the camp circuit hard, making stops at Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan and others and he's been turning heads. The German native is raw but freakishly athletic. At that size he clocked a 4.73 40 at Ohio State and has gone as fast as 4.5 back home with fresh legs. He's got great bend and flexibility. He's got a long, powerful frame.

His unique athleticism can be traced back to his first sport of downhill skiing. His ability as a freestyle mogul skier has developed his hip and ankle flexibility, his bend, coordination and body control. His backward flips on skis offers some additional flair.

At 247Sports, I think highly enough of Welschoff to make him a 4-star in the class of 2018. He's got the versatility to play either side of the football but he's also got the versatility to enroll as either a class of 2018 or 2017 prospect. Several schools are mulling over the possibility of adding him to this fall's roster.

On Tuesday, Welschof plans to camp at Maryland where there are scholarships available in the class of 2017. There is also some frantic vetting going on behind the scenes at a few of his other stops to determine what academic hurdles need to be cleared to admit a foreign student late in the process.

Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan have all expressed serious interest and Welschof is now planning on extending his trip to possibly hit a Southeast school or two. The race is on not only for the coaching staffs at some interested schools, but also for the admissions offices and support staffs to wade through the process of bringing in an international student. If staffs can find some clarity to those questions, expect more major offers to follow.

Welschof isn't alone either. Alongside him on these college trips has been Zavier Scott, an American by birth from a military family currently living in Germany. Scott has the potential to play wide receiver and defensive back and clocked a blazing 4.38 40 at Ohio State's camp. Like Welschof, Scott is a potential 2017 enrollee.
