Bummer, but understandable.

Hunter Atherton plans to transfer

The Nebraska volleyball team looks like it will be without both setters from the 2017 team when it begins its national title defense next season.

Hunter Atherton, who completed her redshirt freshman season this fall, confirmed to The World-Herald on Thursday that she intends to seek a transfer.

Her transfer leaves Nebraska thin at the setter position for 2018 with the graduation of All-American Kelly Hunter. Nicklin Hames, the nation’s top setter recruit for this fall according to PrepVolleyball.com, is the only setter currently expected to be on NU’s roster for next season.

The Huskers could add to that depth by seeking an incoming transfer setter, as the program has three times before in the last decade. Sydney Anderson (Utah, 2008), Lauren Cook (UCLA, 2010), the daughter of head coach John Cook, and Mary Pollmiller (Tennessee, 2013), each earned Nebraska’s starting job after beginning their careers at other schools.

Atherton played in 20 matches in 2017 and was the starting setter for the first two matches of the season when starter Kelly Hunter was injured. She had a career-high 47 assists in NU’s 3-1 loss against Oregon in the season opener.

I had heard rumors of this yesterday but didn’t want to post anything till confirmed.

Its too bad she is leaving but I can see why if she doesn’t feel like she can beat out Nicklin Hames and therefore would be only a serving specialist for rest of career. This is still worrisome because we will not have a backup setter without a transfer.

This is what I am thinking also.  Hames is so talented that it will be hard to keep her off the court.

From Jacob Padilla's article about Atherton's transfer:

Nicklin Hames is a 5-foot-11 setter from Knoxville, Tennessee, who is ranked fourth nationally in the 2018 class. Playing for her mother at Webb High School, Hames was part of five straight state championship squads as she began her varsity career as an eighth grader. She was named an Under Armour All-American following her senior season.

“Nicklin is a great all-around player and an elite setter with strong leadership skills,” Cook said in a release after Hames signed her letter of intent. “She competes really hard and we have been impressed with her ability to take average hitters and make them great. Nicklin’s mom, Chris, is from Australia and is her high school coach, and her dad, Jason, runs the K2 club, so she comes from a significant volleyball background.”

In Nebraska, is an 8th grader even allowed to play varsity sports?

That's a good question. I don't know how the NSAA handles stuff like that. Could be in their rules & regs, could be a case-by-case basis, kind of like transferring a kid to a different school district.

I"m not sure they CAN'T but I am pretty sure you can only play four years so it wouldn't make a lot of sense for them to play as 8th graders then have to sit as seniors.

It'll be officially announced this week that Atherton has transferred to North Carolina. She posted this on her Insta.

I'm so excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at the University of North Carolina! I am forever grateful for my time at the University of Nebraska but very excited to move on with this new chapter of my life! #goheels
