Eppley Airfield will begin offering its first-ever international flight starting May 1. The daily nonstop flight to Toronto will be operated by Air Canada.

Had no idea direct service to Toronto was coming to Omaha in May. This is HUGE for Omaha though to add its first-ever international flights.

Delta Airlines will add a second nonstop flight between Omaha’s Eppley Airfield and New York City’s LaGuardia Airport.

The daily flight is scheduled to begin July 8. It will leave New York City at 2:05 p.m. and arrive in Omaha at 4:35 p.m. The flight will then leave Omaha at 5:10 p.m. and land in New York at 9:10 p.m.

Delta has operated a nonstop flight from Omaha to LaGuardia — which leaves Omaha in the early morning and leaves New York late at night — since 2009, said Steve McCoy, Eppley’s manager of airline affairs.

If you’re a metro-area business traveler looking for easy access to midsize cities like Louisville, Kentucky, or Milwaukee, major commercial airlines won’t have you covered with a nonstop flight.

People who fly regularly to such markets can now instead look to OneJet, a new airline that will begin offering a twice-per-weekday nonstop flight between Milwaukee and Omaha, starting Nov. 1.

OneJet Chief Executive Matthew Maguire said in an interview with The Omaha World-Herald that the Milwaukee route could be just the beginning of its service out of Omaha’s Eppley Airfield. It could expand service to other midsize cities from Omaha.

“We’re starting with the Milwaukee route, but we see a lot of potential for additional routes out of Omaha. It really meets the profile for the type of city we’re looking to get into,” Maguire said.

Omaha doesn't have any direct flights to Cancun (or somewhere like that) in the winter?

guess not which is pretty crazy. I don't live in NE though so I never fly out of OMA. We have direct flights pretty much everywhere from CLT. It's great living in an area with the hub airport.

As Omaha’s Eppley Airfield draws a record number of passengers — 2017 was its busiest-ever year — significant upgrades to the airport are on the horizon.

Passenger counts are bumping up against levels that would trigger major renovations and, eventually, an expansion of the airport, which some people say is starting to burst at the seams as it gets closer and closer to its capacity.

About 4.6 million people used the airport in 2017, a 6 percent increase over 2016. That’s the biggest annual percentage increase the airport has seen since 2005. It also marks the fourth consecutive year of growth, and a big change since the Great Recession, when passenger counts were steadily declining.

Airport officials say the increased traffic was driven largely by strong demand from travelers, but also by new routes to and from Omaha; more flights on routes already serviced; and additional seats, or capacity, available for purchase, often from airlines flying larger planes.

In 2016, Eppley was No. 9 nationally when it came to added flight capacity — measured in the number of available seats to purchase — when compared with other medium- and large-size U.S. airports. And airlines have continued to add new routes, including the airport’s first international service, a daily Air Canada nonstop flight to Toronto, which begins May 1.

Good to hear, wonder how much longer before Eppley needs to expand and add more runways/terminals?  With my daughter in competitive cheer, we have annual trips to Denver, Dallas, and have qualified consistently for Chicago and Orlando.  I usually look at what Eppley can provide, but have also taken flights from KC for some competitions and vacations as it's SO much cheaper and offers more direct flights.   I'd like to see Eppley be competitive with KC in terms of size, flghts and prices.

Omaha’s first regularly scheduled international flight is a month away from taking off.

The daily nonstop Air Canada flight to Toronto will begin May 1.

“It opens up a whole new menu of options for the local market here in Omaha,” said Kevin Howlett, senior vice president of regional markets and government relations for Air Canada. Howlett was in Omaha this week to prepare for the flight and meet with Omaha Airport Authority officials and others.

Air Canada isn’t expecting a glut of people to visit Toronto, but many might use the flight to make international connections in Toronto to Europe, Asia or Australia. The flight’s timing — it leaves Omaha in late afternoon — makes it ideal for making international connections.

The flight will leave Toronto about 2:30 p.m. and land in Omaha at 4 p.m. The return flight will leave Omaha at 4:30 p.m. and land in Toronto at 7:50 p.m. Air Canada will fly the route with a 50-seat, single-class CRJ-200 jet.

American Airlines appears to be ending its daily nonstop service between Omaha’s Eppley Airfield and Miami International Airport.

The airline does not have any nonstop flights scheduled beyond Aug. 21, said Steve McCoy, manager of airline affairs at Eppley.

American did not immediately respond to questions about the service.

American began offering the flight in July of last year. The airline said at the time the flight to Miami was intended to offer Omaha travelers a gateway to American’s extensive Latin American and Caribbean routes, many of which take off from Miami.

United Airlines will add a second daily nonstop flight between Eppley Airfield and San Francisco International Airport next year.

United will launch the additional flight on Feb. 14. The airline began offering a single daily nonstop flight to San Francisco in September 2016.

That route’s success prompted the airline to add the second daily flight, said Steve McCoy, manager of airline affairs at Eppley.

“The San Francisco Bay Area is a popular destination for Omaha business and leisure travelers with over 129,000 passengers flying between the two markets every year,” McCoy said in a statement. “The additional flight also provides further opportunities to connect through United’s Asia Pacific network.”

As Eppley Airfield recorded its busiest month ever in May, airport officials are beginning the next stage of planning for future renovations and expansion.

The Omaha Airport Authority will begin bidding out contracts for the next phases of the airport’s renovation and expansion this year, which will eventually lead to renovated terminal and gate areas.

Eppley recorded 459,693 passengers in May, surpassing the last monthly record from June 2017 of about 445,100 passengers. May also marks three years of consecutive passenger growth at the airport, said Steve McCoy, Eppley’s manager of airline affairs.

“We expect this to be quite a busy summer,” McCoy said.

The growth has been fueled by new nonstop flights to and from Eppley, airlines flying larger aircraft on routes to keep up with demand and additional flights on existing routes.

While some of the major changes are still several years out from completion, the airport will be making some cosmetic upgrades this year.

United Airlines said Monday that it would expand service from Omaha to the New York area.

The airline, which currently operates two nonstop flights to and from Newark Liberty International Airport, will begin flying three daily nonstop flights. Newark, New Jersey, is just outside New York City.
