O-line

Listening to Sharp & Benning... It was stated they squatted out of season and made gains but in season Riley didn’t want them lifting too much for fear of injury. Mark Phillip’s hands were tied. Some guys did squat and commit to weights in season but the accountability and requirement was not there so some guys got lazy and didn’t lift like they should have. They also weren’t required to eat 3 meals a day at the training table and were eating bad foods. The body fat on these guys was way too high. They lost muscle mass as the season went on and thus lost mental confidence. When they did squat it was an assisted Olympic type.

Now they are doing old school bar on the back squats and it’s being required with accountability for all linemen consistently. All the team is also required to eat 3 meals a day from the training table to eliminate a lot of the bad food options they were choosing.

I wouldn't expect upper classmen that get a lot of playing time to have the same workout in season as their off season workout. I assumed in season workouts would be geared toward maintaining strength rather than increasing strength. Not lifting for 4 months is shocking to think how much strength they probably lost. Without being very disciplined with diet it's easy to put on fat since you're no longer burning off a lot of calories.  I wonder if Riley also thought weight lifting made players slow which was a prevailing misconception back in his playing days.

Do you have more information on Olympic type squats that they were doing? Google told me it's high bar squat and depth is lower which sounds different from what you alluded to.

It showed. They had the athletic ability to get it done but were constantly out of position and one step behind.

56 guys on the UCF team this year were 0-12 two years ago. Unified purpose and a cohesive staff makes all the difference in the world.
