No weirder than people calling a guy "Bookie".  It's just his nickname.  Even uses it in his Twitter handle.

Thanks for the clarification. Heard an interview with him and his dad a month or so again, and when his dad called him that, it seemed like a real term of endearment between a father and son.

Had it actually been just his dad’s nickname, that would be creepy indeed. If anyone calls me “Tiger” or “Brogsie Baby”, my skin will crawl.
