NFL Changes Nation Anthem Protocols

Recommended Posts

Just a reminder, since I don't see what sports has to do with the military.

Quote

As recently as 2015, the Department of Defense was doling out millions to the NFL for such things as military flyovers, flag unfurlings, emotional color guard ceremonies, enlistment campaigns, and — interestingly enough — national anthem performances. Additionally, according to Vice, the NFL’s policy on players standing for the national anthem also changed in 2009, with athletes “encouraged” thereafter to participate. Prior to that, teams were not given any specific instructions on the matter; some chose to remain in the locker room until after opening ceremonies were completed. (It’s unclear whether the policy change was implemented as a direct result of any Defense Department contracts.)

Why stop at just the players ? If they want to force “patriotism “ every person in the stadium should be subjected to punishment for noncompliance . Vendors, babies , children, old folks , people in wheelchairs etc should all be required to wear MAGA hats, and stand at attention for the anthem, or be immidiately escorted from the stadium . :sarcasm

Personally I’d like to see them quit playing it at every game, and go back to using it for special occasions only . I tune in to see the game not all that stuff anyway .

I've been saying this for years.

There's a thin line between patriotism and jingoism.  We're seeing a bit of the latter creep into our culture lately. It's not a good thing.

I am also on the side that feels the commercialization of the troops and patriotism is more than a wee bit creepy.

Also screw the Cowboys.

I'm a Cowboys fan, but even I don't like them that much.  But, if that's what you want to do, go for it.  But make sure to get consent from Tyron Smith first, he might just break something off of yours....

Stupid jokes aside, and I admit I'm kind of biased, but I thought the way Jones and the Cowboys handled the anthem last year when it got heated was perfect (kneeling as a team before the anthem and then standing).  It was a solid statement recognizing the issue of racial inequality and at the same time not giving people a reason to complain about how unpatriotic they are.  It basically ruined the argument for people that aren't capable of looking past the kneeling during the anthem.  Now, how genuine Jerry was is always questionable, but he's at least good at making people happy.  Except Eagles fans, they're always miserable people!

They are quite dissimilar in the context that the NBA's rules didn't harshen or become more strict facing backlash to protests during the anthem. In a vacuum, sure, they're pretty much the same, but the key here is the direction taken after there was suddenly a problem.
