That’s not correct. Oklahoma would have to get permission from the Oklahoma Legislature to move. And yes, T. Boones Farms Pickens has thrown obscene amounts of money at the legislature in order to try and control it. Same with Texass, BTW.

 

Kansas, OTOH, doesn’t have to get approval (maybe this is who you were thinking of Stumpy?) We know this because Kansas has one foot in the now-defunct Big East Football conference when everything happened in 09-10 and confirmed as such in local media. 

 

Now, would Okie Lite block OU from leaving? No, because Oklahoma’s vote prevents the BigXII from re-upping the GOR and expanding. Oklahoma being forced to stay on would just embolden them, and Oklahoma would be able to weather the ensuing fiscal and competitive storm—Okie Lite (and the other also-ran Big XII teams) would not, or they wouldn’t last for very long if they can. 

 

We’ve kinda known Oklahoma has been B1G bound for some time now—this news confirms it, and this should put a bounce in the steps of the Nebraska faithful when it comes to B1G expansion and our future in the conference. 

 

The question to ask is whether Texas or Kansas will move with them. Smart money is on Kansas, as I don’t think that clusterf*** of an AD at Texas is truly settled, especially since the inmate boosters run that asylum now.

The Oklahoma Legislature has no say when it comes to any of the Universities in the State of Oklahoma.   Each of the Universities is governed by their own BOR and only the Academic side reports to the BOR of Higher Learning.   The only person that could block the move would be the Governor of Oklahoma.   Here is a write up of it.

Yes I remember that article, and I’ve said long ago that it doesn’t cover the reality of the situation, only the base legality. Oklahoma state legislature approves funding for the school as part of their state budget, as they are a state school. That money isn’t guaranteed, and since Pickens is buying up legislators, it can very easily be held hostage (see Texass’ move to the Big XII that gave the conference the s***show that is Baylor). 

 

In short, from a fiscal and political standpoint, Oklahoma needs legislative approval, or it will get messy quick.

The way Oklahoma is NOT funding public school districts, they may be down to one community college for the entire state quickly

Very true, but that may be a discussion better served under the Politics/Religion tab, and not necessarily here. 

 

Though one does need to point out that Oklahoma is $1 Billion (yes, Billion) in debt, so the legislature does have Oklahoma by the cojones when it comes to any fiscal matters.

Then again, the sweet, sweet B1G phat checks will help alleviate some of fiscal concerns they may have currently, just as the Athletic Department at DoNU is giving back to the University proper.
