A Stupid Question

During one of those Osborne seasons I sat behind an elderly woman who came to the games by herself. Every time Nebraska failed to convert a third down, she'd throw up her hands and say "well there goes the Orange Bowl!"

So, was it Callahan or Pelini or Riley that actually put her in the grave? Or possibly one of those pre 1994 Orange Bowls?

So going down the same rabbit hole

is Bill Callahan the most underrated coach in school history?

No.  Amazingly, I think the most underrated coach in Nebraska history is Bob Devaney.

But Callahan left the cupboards amazingly full.

One of the issues with Mike Riley is he was a 62-year old coach. When you hire a 62-year old football coach, you are screaming "win now!"

Frost is 43 and has time to adjust and build this thing the right way.

Another thing, Bo did not leave the 'cupboard bare.' That 2015 team had 6 losses by a touchdown or less. Many were due to game mismanagement way beyond anything Frost and Co have done. The 2016 team was ranked in the top ten in late October before a close loss to Wisconsin. Those teams could have put Bo over the top, if Bo could only get out of his own way.

Bo had his best teams with Callahan's recruits, but Bo also created a culture where every game mattered and competition. I don't want to relitigate Bo, but I appreciate his consistency more and more. We've took winning for granted it became hard to appreciate someone who cranked out 9 wins and good kids. It didn't help those miserable SOB's at the OWH were rooting for him to fail. One thing about Bo is I always felt you had to earn your spot and the best players played. T

Frost has disappointed me with game management and special teams. Certainly a veteran coach like Les Miles could have 'coached up' the Huskers and squeaked out a win or two in 2018.

But the Frost system is not to out-Mark Dantonio or Les Miles an opponent, although that approach would be useful this year.

The Frost System is to put up tons of points and outscore their opponents. It's to put up 40 points by the 4th quarter. It's to Tom Osborne'em again.

It's going to be worth is in the long-run and moves like promoting Kade Warner and losing Lindsay (best of luck) tell me things are getting better.

Riley's team last year flat gave up in November. I want to see this team improve and fight.

Keep the faith. GBR

I'm going to break it down to just one issue. It's been a problem for all these coaches.

Defense.

Our defense has been bad. Really bad. Like, the other team can't believe we let them run the same play over and over and over bad. A defense that may be lacking speed, and still chooses to give  an 8 yard cushion on every play. It's actually getting mystifying, and it seems to have infected Scott Frost, too.

We can talk offensive identity all we want, but nothing is going to change until we field a coherent defense.

Eh ... that's the narrative but it's not that true.

I felt like beyond the starters there wasn't a whole lot of quality. And it seems like it's been that way for quite a few years now.

I can't figure out why we aren't fielding a credible defense, but you're right, until we can field a defense worthy of the name we are going to continue losing. We can blame and nit pick the offense all we want but the offense didn't give up 42 points to Purdue.

you know when someone admittedly asks a stupid question, and by no means is this to be construed as a personal attack directed at the OP, I am compelled to counter with a stochastic and equally  absurd statement.

My statement is, there is a brownish crinkle ridge that needs your mucus coated tongue's massaging waggle, this area of my anatomy, which rhymes with the slang word "aint", once stimulated by your lizard lick tickle flicker will unleash the wisdom of a 1000 irritable bowel syndrome suffering  midgets to provide you such answer.

Or you could just stop asking stupid questions....your, or anyone's choice

I think Riley would have won at least one game. But y'all are in a waaaay better position with Frost.

It's a completely different system that needs different personnel and experienced leaders to run it. Riley could have been more successful so far continuing his system with his players and his leaders.

I know it looked to a lot of people like Frost walked in to UCF and turned the team around in no time, but that first season was a big disappointment to UCF fans. We were questioning whether we hired the right guy.

Thanks! Good to be back. I think it's been close to a year since my last post.

Some of the UCF fans were gloating about the meltdown happening on the Nebraska boards, so I figured I would head over here and see how y'all were doing and contribute what I could.

When I was on the board before, a lot of Husker fans thought that Frost took over a horrible winless UCF and turned them into an undefeated one quickly, but that wasn't really the case. We had a talented team, we just had a MASSIVE amount of coaching drama, with the players and the coaches giving up on each other around the same time.

So when Frost took that team and only won 6 games and lost to Arkansas St in a bowl game, a lot of UCF fans (myself included) wondered if we picked the right coach. I mean, Milton got booed for a lot of that first year. He looked bad, even for a freshman.

But Frost was just finding his guys and developing his culture. I think that will take longer at Nebraska, though, since the players and system are so different.
