I love AOC. Love that she's shaking stuff up, love that she refuses to be silenced, that she's taking the fight in directions it needs to go, and so on. She's a breath of fresh air.

But I also wish she'd stop unapologetically exacerbating the division. Wish she'd go higher when they go lower instead of engaging with some of the more boorish responses to her.

i view her as the democratic version of donald trump.   to far from the center to help unite our country.   unfortunately with the advent of trumpism and russian propaganda the divide is what our country is storming towards.

I think she's too far to the left to ever be elected president.

That doesn't mean she can't be a force for good by pushing the Democrats to the left instead of clinging to the center. The problem is the center in our country is many times too far to the right to begin with.

So all progressives (Sanders, Warren, Yang, Khan, AOC, Talib, Etc.) are the democratic version of Trump? The difference between these people and Trump are their policies poll very well (including the GND) with the majority of Americans. And their policies will help middle and lower class Americans and not just the elite. Like I said in a post earlier this week, I will not vote for a candidate who does not support medicare for all anymore. So if that makes me a radical progressive, then so be it.

Except she's supporting policies that the majority of Americans are in favor of - doesn't that make her closer to the center?

Not speaking for Commando here, but while that is a legitimate and worthwhile difference, there is also a similarity (which I think is what he might be referring to) where they become popular by whipping up a frenzied tribal base. AOC and Trump similarly have an attitude of "f#&% the haters we're doing our thing" which really gets their base fired up, but also ferments division and polarization.

There's no more powerful way to create an "us" than by having a clearly defined "them".

Yeah I can see some of the tweets she makes can be seen that way. She needs to rise above the fox news and conspiracy theory crowd. That is mostly who her tweets target. Im hoping its just her being young and like most people as they age, let the little things slide. But she is doing a good job at showing how corrupt our govt. officials really are and how money influences everything in politics and folks are not happy with that.

Why do people pay attention to either?

I mean it’s kind of an important story that AOC won that election but has she done anything since?

I wish the media would have given far less attention to Trump when he was running and the same goes for her now.

AOC introduced the Green New Deal resolution, which has gotten a lot of coverage. Her committee questions of Cohen and the Equifax CEO were also worth covering. And she's going to continue to be in the news as long as the Repubs keep trying to attack her.

I’m willing to bet there have been a lot if proposed climate change laws we’ve never heard of. I’m just not sure why she in particular has become famous. I agree she had some reallt good questions for Cohen.

She did those 3 things in less than 3 months in Congress. Plus the continued attacks from the right. It's more than most of the Dems have done. And she's doing those things while challenging the establishment. I guess I don't understand what you don't understand - there's no other Dem that's as interesting. As the 2020 primaries heat up I suspect we'll hear less about AOC with the news having other Dems to follow in the race.

the right wing media have been constantly attacking her.  they want to paint her and her socialists views as the face of the democrats and make them the enemy of "real americans"

My guess would be her past. She was a bartender before running for congress and was not from a wealthy family. You dont see many working class people run, let alone win a seat in the government.  Working class people see her as one of them. That along with her exposing the corruption of govt is a big reason why she is talked about so much.

It keeps being mentioned she’s being attacked by the right. I’m not asking why people on the left are paying so much attention to her. I’m asking why people are paying so much attention to her. I.e. part of the question is why the right is paying so much attention to her. Being attacked by the right has brought attention to her from viewers, but why is the right attacking and obsessing over her so much? I guess they want to lift her up as this token liberal that represents the party because they think she’s easy to tear down and they can paint Democrats as socialists. It will always amaze me and I will always ask why people fall for that kind of s#!t.

I guess it’s harder to understand when you never watch TV news.

She's young, feisty, brazenly outspoken, a woman, attractive, blue collar, has somewhat wild/radical policy and social ideas, and also has had more than a few gaffes with trying to communicate something on camera.

So she's basically the complete embodiment of a threatening outsider who doesn't belong, and also an easy punching bag and strawman (or woman, as it were).
