Don't forget Travis Lewis...

:bonez

Did he commit as well?

No, and I don't think Herron has either, but both are squarely on the radar. And don't forget Earl Patin. This could be a SICK LB class...

You got that right. Good class to reload on LB's it will be time for them to step up and play in 08.

Linebacker pledges to NU

By STEVEN M. SIPPLE / Lincoln Journal Star

Wednesday, Oct 11, 2006 - 10:47:45 am CDT

NU and Head Coach Bill Callahan picked up another recruit this week.

Calling it the first of many tough decisions he’ll have to make in his life, Blake Lawrence pledged Wednesday to accept Nebraska’s football scholarship offer, choosing the Huskers over Kansas.

“It came down to two great coaches, two great programs,” he said.

A 6-foot-2, 200-pound starting quarterback and safety at Shawnee Mission West (Kan.) High School, Lawrence likely will play outside linebacker at Nebraska, he said.

“He likes to bend his knees and likes to hit,” said Shawnee Mission West head coach Tim Callaghan.

Lawrence also likes to hit the books. He scored a 23 on his ACT as a seventh-grader and recently raised it to a 31. He currently has a 4.37 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale and has accumulated 30 college credits, which means he will arrive at Nebraska as a sophomore in academic standing.

His goal is to earn a master’s degree in five years.

“He’s a very intelligent football player and a well-rounded kid,” Callaghan said. “He’s definitely as gifted a student as he is an athlete.”’

Lawrence becomes the 13th player to orally commit to Nebraska’s class of 2007. He received a four-star rating (out of a possible five) from Rivals.com and a three-star rating from Scout.com.

Lawrence also received scholarship offers from Kansas, Arizona State, Colorado, Kansas State, Michigan State and Texas Tech. He chose the Huskers despite the fact his brother, Tyler Lawrence, is a scholarship freshman quarterback at Kansas.

“I had great family support making this decision, including my brother,” Blake Lawrence said.

Shawnee Mission West takes a 6-0 record into district play this weekend. The Vikings are ranked No. 2 in Kansas’ largest classification (6A).

“I think Blake wanted to start (districts) with a clear head,” Callaghan said.

Lawrence this season has made 42 tackles, one interception and one sack. He also has completed 25 of 48 passes for 520 yards and six touchdowns, with no interceptions. He has rushed 30 times for 150 yards and nine scores.

In last week’s 51-7 win against Lawrence (Kan.) High, Lawrence made seven tackles and completed 6 of 11 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed five times for 54 yards and a TD.

His father, Michael, was an All-American kicker at William Jewell (Mo.) College.
