What did we learn: Ohio State

Recommended Posts

Get a few more players and this team can compete with anyone in the Big 10.

This Ohio State team is weaker than past teams.

Martinez still has his freshman moments

D still has gaping mistakes.

Urban leaves in a year or two because of *health*

- The team has improved in certain areas.  There are still glaring holes on this team that have to be addressed.

- Pass protection is one of those.

- Would it be possible to clone Alex Henery AND Adi Kunalic?

- A pass rusher would make a world of difference.

- Safety is, and will continue to be a weakness.

- Adrian can play with the best of them, and even carry a team (see the first half).

Improvements are happening across the board (exception special teams) but one area that I’m pleased to see is the lack of dumb penalties over the last 3 games. Penalties being cleaned up is a direct sign of discipline and accountability

Our special teams are horrible.  It might be the worst we've ever had.

I feel like the offense went backwards in the second half with a couple drops and Martinez not being on target. We should have been able to do more against that secondary.

I guess we didn't get blown out but that Ohio State team has issues and we couldn't capitalize.

We left about 12 points on the field on 3 plays. Take those away and Nebraska snags a monumental upset.

Theyve gotten so much better than they were at the start of the year.

Find better kickers. Consider a dedicated ST coach

Some positives on defense today. Still miles away from what we need but overall a decent day.

Find one pass rusher(or more) that teams have to account for all the time.

Oline is developing and starting to be able to if not consistently control the LOS hold their own against elite teams. We can run on anyone. Need to improve pocket/pass blocking

Offense still a bit inconsistent but if you put up 30 you usually should win.

I dont one think we are going to sneak up on anyone anymore. Iowa should be worried

The improvement is noticeable, but there's still a ton of things to clean up before this program gets anywhere remarkable.

I learned Scott Frost was right when he said the Michigan game was rock bottom. After today its hard to not see us playing anybody tough going forward

Continued confirmation that Frost picked the right signal caller. Other than the boneheaded backwards pass Martinez was a stud once again. 340 total yards and 3 touchdowns in the shoe as a true freshman.

This is how i see it also.

We just need some difference makers on defense and we will be hard to stop.

Piggybacking off others, the game has three phases. NU is fair in one, good/very good in another and absolutely sucks ballz in the third. Coaching? Dunno. Jovan's a frigging rocket scientist, but summin' ain't right. Fix that third phase and we be groovin'.

I think when you have a genuine playmaker , particularly when they are a true freshman things like that pass will happen. They just always want to make something happen. I love the attitude of the kid. I’m ok with occasional bonehead mistakes trying to make something happen. Brett Favre used to do crazy stupid s#!t all the time but at the end of the day he won the game more often then not if you put the ball in his hands

This team is playing like they believe in themselves.  We need to plug in the right recruits to fit the scheme but all in all....They made HUGE leaps in the past 3 games.

1.  I def feel good about things and even though we did lose we are clearly getting better and I love watching this team despite the frustrations and self destructive behavior.  Nebraska cleans it up and they win that game.

2.  Great post Nebraska Harry

I said it after Colorado and I'll say it again. This team is going to be good. We can quibble over coaching decisions, talent levels, etc, but I think we can all agree that if you take last year's team and Ohio State blocks the punt and scores a TD to make it 9-7 they wouldn't have recovered. The future is bright, and honestly the near future doesn't look too bad.

I was fully prepared to get owned today, instead I was frustrated we didn't pull out the win. A couple of dropped passes and missed tackles and maybe we blow them out.

That is where Frost has this team.

Your argument is invalid. Last years team cannot make OSU punt :)

If not for the two drops, and perhaps even one, we win this game.

We are a few players short now. I hope one recruiting class can fix it, but we may need two classes.

For depth probably, but really one badass pass rusher and this defense looks a lot better I bet

Preach my friend.  If you told me that Quinn did more than 5 minutes of prep for his games I'd be floored.

Our offense is going to be very, very scary.  It is currently very good.  A drop or two away from beating OSU on the road.....While we were 2-6.

OL needs some help.

We need some skill depth. Injuries to Oz and Mo hurt.

Defense continues to struggle on slant routes.

Mo is a beast in the middle, but we desperately need a run stuffing beast instead of meeting the RB and getting rolled for yards.

We need a true NT.  A big, strong guy doesn't always translate to a good NT.

Ability to get pressure with a 4 man rush wins games.  We do not have that yet.

We need a defender at every level that the O needs to account for each and every play.  O has guys like AMart, JD. Stan, but the D is lacking.  IMHO, Honas, Bootle and JoJo can be that guy (any word on JoJo's injury).  We need a dedicated edge rusher.

Heart breaking loss, but we are truly evolving and getting better.

When Frost talks, he is honest.  No coach speak.  He is brutally honest in his assessment of where they are and what needs to improve.  He also isn't kying when he says how uch we've improved or this was our best practice, Michigan was rock bottom etc...And especially honest when he said teams better get their shots in now.....

What I learned is the following:

(1) The future is very bright for the Nebraska Huskers. We have a very young team that continues to improve week after week and we will be very good next year.

(2) Our offense can play with anyone in the country

(3) Our defense is improving but is still work in progress. We CANNOT DEPEND ON THEM TO WIN A GAME FOR US AND STOP OPPOSING TEAMS WHEN IT MATTERS MOST.

(4) The difference in the games comes down to the fact that Ohio State has excellent Special Teams and we have the s#!tTIEST Unspecial teams in all of the universe. I have been saying this for eight weeks now and some wise guys on this board keep making wise comments. Calling our special teams special is an insult to the word. The unspecial teams coach is useless and that is the understatement of the century. If this guy cashes his check this month, he will be stealing from Nebraska. NO TEAM HAS EVER COMPETED FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A s#!tTY UNSPECIAL TEAMS. Until we fix our special teams play, we will not compete for anything. They cost us this game. We can’t block kicks, we can’t go after punts, we can’t pin teams back...heck, we can’t even KICK A BALL after we score.

Having said that, I am very happy with where we are at this time. We competed at a very hard place to play. Our players showed heart. We needed all three phases of the game to klick to win this game and we got two of those happening. Our defense played good enough for us to win. Our offense moved the ball up and down the field very nicely but our unspecial teams did everything they can to lose us the game. I hope we win our last three games and finish on a high note. I am super excited for the future of my Huskers.

I learned...to my surprise. ...that Ohio state did NOT come out playing fired up and angry after a loss. That team looked off. We couldn't capitalize.

Also interesting to watch frost start aggressive then switch to conservative.

I think aggressive kind of backfired. OR maybe it did if that was in fact an onside kick.

I wish I was pleased by the outcome.  I really do. It could have been a lot worse, I get it.  It's just really frustrating and disappointing how it played out.  So many blown opportunities.

Case in point. You want to all of a sudden be a team that wins top ten matchups on the road? It’s about progress and we made a huge step in the right direction today. Do you not recognize this?

I think there is a difference in being pleased by the outcome which I am not either but optimistic about what we are seeing and I think that’s where the disconnect is on this board. We shouldn’t be pleased that we lost today. It was a winnable game. But I think you can be happy about the effort and development that is occurring with this team which I certainly am. I’m far more excited about our football team then I have been since Suh was here to be honest

we've improved in every area except special teams. and that's not exactly an area you can fix overnight.

we played more physical than osu, but they turned it on when they needed to because they still have the talent advantage.

osu does not look like a top 10 team, and they will field better teams in future years, so we have to get that much better.

That even though we have some tough games left on the schedule, there's absolutely no one that this team should be afraid of.

Are you pleased we were in that position? If you need perspective, think of the last 3 times we played them.

I really understand people being frustrated about us losing this game. It is frustrating indeed coming so close and then falling short. However, I am extremely pleased by how far this team has come in such a short period. Five weeks ago, I was thinking that Ohio state would hang 70 on us. So, I was extremely pleased to see that we were competitive throughout the game and had a few chances to win it. We created three turnovers and held them below their average yardage at their own home.

The biggest frustrtation is knowing that if we only got decent play from our unspecial teams, we could have easily won this game and everyone who watched this game knows that. I choose to see this as a great win for us and a huge step in the right direction. I am confident we will win the remaining three games in our schedule if we continue to play like today. Who knows, we might even get invited to the toilet bowl. Any bowl at this point will be greatly appreciated.

I guess I don’t see how being bummed that we weren’t able to pull out the win and seeing/appreciating the progress the team has made are mutually exclusive.

Of course I’m pleased we were in the position to win the game. It doesn’t change the fact that it sucks we lost.

I don’t see how any fan of any team wouldn’t be bummed that their team lost, no matter the margin of victory or how big of underdogs they were.
