Maurice Washington Faces Charges

Is, in your opinion, Maurice Washington a person/player of high character?

I don't know Maurice Washington in any way, other than what is in the media.  Therefore, I have no idea if he is a person of high character or not.

The quality of a person's character, or what a person is (good or bad), is obviously subjective.  That being said, my personal belief is that a person is the sum of their actions in this life.  Therefore, I don't think we can simply take one decision or action from a person's life and pass judgement on their entire life.  This is probably stating the obvious, but I'm sure there are many people that could be classified as high character people, who have done stupid or hurtful things to others (both inside and outside of the law).

If it was someone on another team, we probably wouldn't analyze it as deeply as we are with this case. We might just see a misleading headline about a player being charged with child porn and jump to conclusions based on our biases and emotions. The same thing happened in this case, but since it is close to home we have dissected it for 10 pages, and there has been a variety of opinions.

I recall the Urban Meyer saga in August led to just as much discussion. Even though many of us wanted to see him burn because he dislike OSU and Meyer is a d-bag, many of us put a lot of thought into that situation and discussed many reasonable outcomes while it was still up in the air.

Oh I think there's thoughtful discussion going on here, probably a lot more reasoned than the old days even. But there's still a "circle the wagons" mentality when a Nebraskan makes bad news, and between that and a rush to judgement we end up with pages of speculation.

I've got a teenage son and daughter and I'm hardly naive to the minefield of hormones and indiscretion they navigate every day, or the stupid s#!t we somehow got away with in our youth.Taking all that into account, these allegations still make me queasy.

Speaking of false equivalencies, are we really saying there's not much difference between sending dick and boob picks, and sending a video of a sexual assault two years after the fact with a "remember this, Hoe?" to the victim?

You’re making a big assumption that he knew it was sexual assault (when the police didn’t seem to jump to that conclusion) and leaving out the fact that they dated, which is relevant.

I've got a son and daughter as well, still in grade school, and this sort of stuff terrifies me. I've also done child protective work and currently work on a college campus investigating harassment and discrimination. The ugly things that people do make me queasy every day, and I think about that every time I tuck in my kids at night.

I think of these sort of situations in two different categories:

1) What can we learn from this, and is this something that I can use to either protect my family or teach my family? Whatever Washington did or is accused of doing (or whatever any of the people in this situation did) is bad, and is something to be learned from. That is the moral standpoint.

2) We can't make decisions in this sort of case using our emotions. The criminal system and disciplinary system needs to be neutral, and decisions need to be made based on the evidence without bias. The "circle the wagons" mentality you talk about in this thread seems to be more of the folks wanting to wait until more info comes out, and then there are also a lot of folks rushing to judgment based on their emotions.

It's okay to be disgusted by the situation for many reasons, but also to stand back and wait for more evidence before casting judgment.

Does one documented instance of a teen shaming another constitute low character?

Yes

@StPaulHusker If you had to guess, how many guys on Nebraska's roster would fit the description of "low character" for doing things with the same or similar intent as Washington is alleged to have done in this instance?

You beat me to the keyboard, +1.

This is all the perfect epitome of 'bulletin board fodder.' Realistically, lots of players on the roster have done (or are currently doing) unsavory things. Seriously; that's a realistic take.

Some of them get caught, and some don't. Bottom line: If Frost determines that team rules or NCAA rules were violated, he'll almost certainly kick Maurice off the team. If he hasn't broken team rules, then he probably won't be.

I'm sorry but there's some self-righteousness floating around here that seems a bit naive.
