Maurice Washington Faces Charges

Meh.....Moos, Vaughn and Frost can handle it however they deem best.

What good does trying to snare Moos on his statements do?

It makes a really big difference whether the Athletic Director and/or the department lied to the public about a criminal investigation into one of their players and how they were handling it.

However, I'm rereading the timeline and the statements and it's plausible they didn't know the details.

I've been very busy at work and this thread seems to add posts quickly.  So....I've not read many of them.

But, this one caught my eye. Just for clarification, you only use this to transport candy and puppies.....right?

Hahaha!  I love that candies and puppies have so many meanings!

They know what would happen if they lied during that first statement and that all the info would soon be present. What purpose would they have to even think about lying? At this point people are just reading too much into it to be drawing conclusions like this

I don't know why the University has to get involved in a players private criminal matters.  So like after reading the article, you read things like " arrange an interview with", and referred "Bruning to the athlete"  etc .   What the hell.  It should be like this:  Hi this is California calling, we need to talk to your stud running back about some possible felonies.  Nebraska:  OK his dorm room number is #XYZ and phone number is blah blah , and please ask him to call us if he is going to be extradited.

These are grown a$$ free men.  They aren't a protected class nor are they property of the University.   They are not in the Army, there are no special protections.

Same reason why they provide tutors for every class, free gear from Adidas and the best cafeteria on campus, among others:

So much this.  Everyone wants to try to pick sides that he did or did not assault her.  Maurice did or did not know that it was assault.  The University and AD did or did not lie.  Blah, blah, blah.  Just let it be until all the facts come out and then MAYBE you will have enough information to make an informed decision what "side" to be on.  The semantics and people trying to read into things in this whole situation are ridiculous.

First Statement:

Quote

“Last fall we were contacted by the Nebraska Attorney General’s office and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln police department and made aware that officials in California were interested in interviewing Maurice Washington about a prior incident,” the statement said.

“Details were not shared and there was no additional follow up with the Nebraska Athletic Department. Recently, we were made aware that charges may be filed against Maurice in California. We have not had a chance to review the charges, and will continue to monitor this ongoing legal process.”

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln released another statement regarding the case Tuesday afternoon.

“The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office contacted University Police requesting a point of contact in Athletics to contact a football player. The contact information for Athletics and the Attorney General’s office were provided to each. The nature of the inquiry was not known at the time,” a university spokeswoman said.”

Moos' Statement:

Quote

“Obviously, we’re looking into it in every way that we can, but it’s a legal matter," Moos said during his monthly appearance on the "Husker Sports Nightly" radio program. "We want to make sure that Maurice is cooperating, which he is. We also want to make sure that he knows that he has a great deal of support.

"Then, really, the legal system kind of guides it from here on out."

"We were inquisitive but there wasn’t a lot of conversation that went any further than, ‘We have a concern about something that happened in California and we’ll keep you informed,'" he said. "That’s just kind of how it panned out."

Updated Statement:

Quote

"On September 13, 2018, the UNL Police Department informed the Nebraska Athletic Department that the Nebraska Attorney General’s office was seeking to talk to Maurice Washington. UNLPD also provided contact information for Jamie Vaughn, Executive Associate Athletic Director-Compliance, to the Nebraska Attorney General’s office. UNLPD did not know the nature of the inquiry.

On September 13, Vaughn spoke with Ed Sexton in the Nebraska Attorney General’s office. He was told that the Nebraska Attorney General’s office was cooperating with a California agency and that Sexton wished to speak to Maurice Washington on their behalf. Sexton noted Maurice Washington was not in any trouble in Nebraska, and would not say if Washington was the subject of the inquiry of the California agency, a witness to a matter being investigated or anything related to the nature of why the California agency wished to speak with Washington. Vaughn stated he would look into the possibility of arranging for an interview. Vaughn had no further conversations with the Nebraska Attorney General’s office and Washington retained an attorney. Following department protocol, Vaughn informed Bob Burton, Deputy Athletic Director-Chief of Staff, and Athletic Director Bill Moos of the conversation with the Nebraska Attorney General’s office.

Given the request was coming from the Nebraska Attorney General’s office and the unknown nature of the inquiry, Football program staff introduced Maurice Washington to Jon Bruning, a former Nebraska Attorney General. Bruning had a long-standing friendship with Matt Davison, Associate Athletic Director-Football, and Head Coach Scott Frost preceding either’s employment at the University of Nebraska. Nebraska Football staff were clear to both Bruning and Washington that Washington had to be treated as a normal client and billed appropriately. Any additional questions related to the attorney-client relationship should be addressed to Bruning.

Coach Frost had subsequent communication with Bruning to determine whether the Football program needed to be concerned with the issue or take any action. Bruning did not share the nature of the inquiry due to attorney-client privilege, but noted it involved a text message from when Washington was in California and he doubted it would result in criminal charges.

No additional details on this issue were provided to anyone in the Nebraska Athletic department until an inquiry on Friday, February 8, 2019 when Michael Bott, a reporter for NBC Bay Area contacted the University noting, ‘We will be reporting soon that a University of Nebraska football player is facing felony child pornography charges, as well as misdemeanor charges related to California’s ‘revenge porn’ statute.’ Later on February 8, Bott identified the player as Maurice Washington. This was the first time any reference to the nature of these charges was known to University officials.

Maurice Washington was not enrolled at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in March of 2018, and did not enroll until the fall 2018 semester."

I really don't see how any of this contradicts itself.

The 2pm-6pm guys on 1620 should take this advice. They spent almost their entire show speculating on what and when the university knew. I can no longer listen to that show. JP is an idiot.
