Maurice Washington Faces Charges

I have to ask. Have you read any of the linked articles (granted, they don't relay much solid information) and followed the story and discussion at all? Or did you just see the titles of the two potential charges he may face? You know he dated her......we think we know he received the video when they were both minors but allegedly sent it to her two years later. You know that in Cali when a minor has consensual sex they still consider it assault because the minor apparently can not give consent even if the action was her idea. You know she and the 2 who supposedly "assaulted" her were all 3 kicked out of their high school when the video came to light. How far do you think a school would get expelling the victim of an assault?  We think we know one of the youth who allegedly "assaulted" her got the harsh punishment of...... probation. None of this gives you pause, you're only concerned if he knew she was 15 at the time? I'm guessing he knows exactly how old she is since they dated. I'm guessing he knows a lot more about her than any of us do and likely much about the circumstances of the alleged "assault".

BTW, yes I know if this deal doesn't end up being what I think it is, I will look like a complete a$$hole. For the record, I have a daughter that is 19. If she had been sexually assaulted, no way I'm letting her school kick her out and the perps wouldn't get off with probation because they'd still be trying to find any trace of their missing bodies to be able to give them probation.

Careful with that honesty, some people will go to the DBHOF and say they hope you don't procreate because being honest about your opinions makes you a piece of s#!t.  Or so I've been told.

I like how when people say something inane they find a silly minuscule detail, pretend not to understand it, then try to make the situation about that and hope people forget the original inane comment.  In this case you said you'd stop being a fan of Nebraska when he inevitably stays on the team.

This whole thread is a shining example of just how damn judgemental and dishonest people can be.  So many are ready to throw a barely adult kid under the bus without knowing ANY details whatsoever because the in thing to do is believe every accusation these days, screw the accused they may or may not be wrong but I have a reputation as a good person to maintain!  A term I heard a while back from a wise man on here, "message board honest".  I've tried being blatantly honest on here for a while and it's damaged my reputation quite a bit but I'm honestly getting more and more okay with it because I wish more people would do the same, drop the pious attitudes and stop pretending like this EXACT situation couldn't happen to any one of us or someone we care about.  Then MAGICALLY we would want patience and understanding from those judging us.

Or maybe we need the undercover OU fan to roll back in here and call us all pieces of crap again.

Well they'd be too late. I've already procreated and I really hope I don't procreate anymore.

No, Dude...

but the exchanging of explicit text messages between teenagers is very, very, very, very common...sadly.

Him sending it back to her was really really stupid. Worthy of punishment.

But to completely isolate this incident into “child porn” and totally ruin several peoples lives over it is extremely narrow. He did something stupid. He’ll pay for that. She certainly has. And the other 2 boys, sounds like they have as well.

My kids are 13 & 11, and aren’t real active on their phones, media, apps etc...but they have it and are susceptible to all the world and the internet has to offer, at ANY point.   I have been told point blank by many parents of kids I coached for 5 yrs in youth sports and am around a lot, that this is in many ways parents biggest fear because it’s there forever, and it’s happening ALL the time...

Washington sat on this for a couple years. Stupid. Dozens of kids had distributed, viewed, gossiped, texted, and DM’d it (so it’s been said). Stupid. Doesn’t make it right, doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be consequences. But it COULD happen to many people we know...especially, mostly, and sadly, kids.

Lets wait and see what California decides. Let’s wait and see what the Univ of Nebraska decides. And let’s wait and see what Frost decides. (Interesting...seems like he hasn’t even released one damn comment yet, eh?). And let’s wait and see what Washington does with his “second chance,” wherever that may be.

lastly, the hope would be that these type of semi high profile internet problems helps deter kids from doing and filming stupid stuff. Until then, we are seeing the tip of the iceberg on teens and their internet habits, so let’s just wait and see how it shakes out. I’m cool with whatever happens.

This isn't why she's claiming it's assault. It was brought up in passing earlier in the thread. (I was the one who originally looked it up). It hasn't been mentioned in any articles about it.

I just read California's statutory rape law and I find it weird as hell.  Here in Oregon, we have the Romeo and Juliet law.  It states minors within three years of age can legally have sex with each other.  It's legal for a 17 year old to get naughty with a 14  year old.  Of course, that all changes when a person turns 18.  18 year olds who are caught having sex with 17 year olds or younger will find themselves on the state sex offender registry.

In California, it is absolutely illegal for anybody to consent to sex until they are 18.  Of course, all involved would be charged for non-consensual sex so I'm sure people don't press charges too often.  But with that said, I'm sure a lot of parents get notified when the apple's of their eye get caught in the back seat of someone's hatchback.

As a father of 2 daughters I would have been much more accepting of the Second example than the first . That is a strange law .

We weren't talking about somewhat similar, less egregious situations.  Most of this thread is already dedicated to those false equivalencies.  Redux mentioned this EXACT situation.

Yes, I said EXACT situation could happen to any one of us OR someone we care about.  I guess you don't know any teenagers?

We don't know why she's claiming assault. All we know is she claimed assault and the screwy Cali law that says a 15 yo can't give consent to another 15 yo allows that, among other possible reasons. I may be wrong but since one of the alleged assaulters (is that a word?) only got probation for the assault charge, I'm coming to the conclusion that those who determined probation was a just punishment for the "crime" didn't think it was any kind of real sexual assault so they gave him the lightest possible sentence based on that technicality in the law.

It would be really beneficial if they wouldn't lump such diverse possibilities as the same sexual assault charge. It feels like the same issue is allowing them to call what MW allegedly did as child porn or revenge porn. I don't think the word "porn" belongs in any possibility of what MW may have done. Revenge Harassment (better) but child porn is just wrong imo considering they are effectively the same age and dated each other.

To be honest, it just seems like it was consensual and not a thing until the video got out and her parents saw it. Then she claims it was assault (or maybe her parents claimed it was assault based on the technicality in the law). And now they are doing the same thing with these ancillary changes against MW. Maybe I'm too used to seeing parents who cannot accept certain realities about their own children. I've seen so much of that it likely is preventing me from interpreting this any other way.
