SDNY and Trump

Maybe there's already a thread dedicated to the SDNY investigations into Trump, but if not, I figured it might be helpful to have a spot for it. Sounds like their investigations may be more devastating than Mueller.

"Even as speculation mounts that special counsel Robert Mueller might be winding down his investigation, a parallel threat to President Donald Trump only seems to be growing within his own Justice Department: the Southern District of New York.

Manhattan-based federal prosecutors can challenge Trump in ways Mueller can’t. They have jurisdiction over the president’s political operation and businesses — subjects that aren’t protected by executive privilege, a tool Trump is considering invoking to block portions of Mueller’s report. From a PR perspective, Trump has been unable to run the same playbook on SDNY that he’s used to erode conservatives’ faith in Mueller, the former George W. Bush-appointed FBI director. Legal circles are also buzzing over whether SDNY might buck DOJ guidance and seek to indict a sitting president."

"The digging by the Southern District should be a clue to Trump that, when he leaves office, an indictment may be waiting. That would make it hard for him to do his job as president. It would also give him an incentive to resign and be pardoned by Mike Pence.

And if the Southern District wanted to go after Trump before that, it has tools aplenty at its disposal. It doesn’t seem inconceivable that the office could seek to indict the Trump Organization itself and seize assets derived from criminal activity. Or it could use the RICO statute to get a court to deem the organization a criminal enterprise."

"Trump asked his acting AG to appoint an ally to oversee crucial SDNY investigations: report"

"According to the Times’ report, Trump called Whitaker and asked him if he could put Trump ally Geoffrey S. Berman in charge of the multiple SDNY probes that have been swirling around former “fixer” Michael Cohen and potential corruption at the president’s inaugural committee.

Whitaker said that such an action was impossible, however, because Berman had already recused himself from overseeing those investigations. This angered Trump and caused him to “sour” on Whitaker as an acting attorney general, the Times reports."

House Intel hires former Russian mob prosecutor to lead Trump probes

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/03/05/house-intelligence-daniel-goldman-1204140

"Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) announced on Tuesday that Daniel Goldman joined the committee last month as senior adviser and director of investigations. Goldman, who was second-in-command at SDNY’s organized crime unit, has prosecuted the Russian mob and has secured convictions for racketeering, murder and money laundering, including against the Genovese crime family."

I think it's been mentioned in other threads, but felt it was worth putting here. Schiff bringing in someone from SDNY seems very strategic.

I think his experience wt organized crime is very important.  Trump Inc is just that - whether we talk about his companies, his foundation, his university, his hush money, etc

It really was quite eerie hearing Cohen say during his testimony that Trump didn't direct him to do things but implicitly let him know to do them.

That's 100% the behavior of a mob boss done to retain plausible deniability.
