Remember the USC game?  Seemed to ruin the season.

I remember that very differently. The USC game sucked, but the narrative on here and around the web and maybe even the nation was, "We're still a really good team, USC is just other-worldly good". Then we beat Ball State, which made people pretty damn frustrated and nervous because they were considered a s#!tty opponent, and then we beat Iowa State confidently so we were still relatively optimistic with goals in front of us. Then Missouri happened. Then Oklahoma State. Then Texas A&M.

Nah, that season was doomed even if we hadn't played USC. Painful as the USC game was, you could pretty much see where things were going after we barely eked out a win against Wake Forest the week before (which some seem to have forgotten about - oh look, yet another end-around that we can't defend!).

We were playing the first USC game not to get blown out.
Something that happened far too frequently under Pelini and Riley.

I don't remember Pelini's teams ever playing to not get blown out, but sometimes they played not to lose/let up on the gas when they got ahead.

We should definitely open the year playing a West division foe like Iowa or Northwestern or Minnesota.  A lot of the time we are going to be better than any 3 of them, starting with a tougher test out the gate and notching a division win while saving a cream puff for later in the year is just smart scheduling.

A downside in moving a cream puff back is that is likely a home game being moved back, which is a delayed opportunity for recruiting visits.
