Pace is everything to Fred Hoiberg. But how quickly can he get Nebrasketball to where he wants it?

It is a predictably imperfect process, especially as a workout moves deep into the second hour. One of Hoiberg’s simmering frustrations with his group is how minds drift when fatigue sets in or things go wrong. “When guys get tired,” Hoiberg says, “that’s when their habits revert to where they were.” About 90 minutes into the Monday afternoon practice, the fog descends again. Hoiberg begins to install a specific set. Before he does so, he also specifically asks everyone to pay attention.

He very specifically tells his team that he does not want to talk about this twice.

The first quintet on the floor runs the set without issue. The second botches it completely.

“Hey guys,” Hoiberg says, without raising his voice even a fraction of a decibel, “please watch the f#&%ing group in front of you.”
