AVCA Poll 2019

Recommended Posts

After trouncing Rutgers to begin a three-match home stand, the Huskers gutted out another win against a feisty Penn State team.

Beat your conference rival, you get to take their spot in the poll. The Huskers and the Nittany Lions swap spots, with NU going up to #7 and PSU falling to #8.

The Huskers have played Penn State 17 times since joining the Big Ten in 2011. You may recall that Russ Rose had the Nittany Lions on an historic run, winning six out of eight National Championships from 2007-2014.  However, after losing four of the first seven matches against PSU from 2011-2014, the Huskers have now won nine of the last ten. Each of the last four matches has gone five sets, and the only loss Nebraska has since 2014 came last year in five at Rec Hall. Nine of the 17 matches have gone five games. The Huskers have won 8 of those five-gamers.

Again there are six Big Ten teams in the Top 25, the amazingest one being 11-10 Illinois who just can't seem to find a way to get unranked. They're 40th in the RPI but 21st in the poll.

Little addendum to this thread - The Lopers over at UNK are trouncing all comers this year, too. They're currently 26-0 and ranked #2 in the Div. 2 poll.

Between Nebraska, Creighton and UN-Kearney, you've got three teams in the Top 10, two of which are D1, with a combined record of 63-6.

And one of those six losses was when two of these teams played each other.

Huskers remain at #6 this week. Struggling to put away a crummy Iowa team won't impress the voters.

Last year at this time, with an arguably better team (with Foecke & Maloney) we were also ranked 6th after Week 12, but with a worse record. This year we're 22-3, last year at this time we were 20-6.

The Big Ten just keeps churning out teams in the Top 25, and once again I wonder how it's possible that Illinois is ranked. They have four more losses than any other ranked team and their 13 losses are five more than the next-best team.
