Considering the lack of any designed runs for him, I think it's entirely possible that he was told to not put himself in any danger in this game. Quote Link to comment

I doubt Martinez will have an issue turning it on. Perhaps trying to turn it off had him a bit off-kilter. 2 Quote Link to comment

I am I
I was commenting to my brother that the play calling wasn’t helping matters at all. Good to see frost hold himself accountable as well. Quote Link to comment

Glad to see him admit it was an issue. Most play callers don’t. 1 Quote Link to comment

I don’t know, but we called a lot more runs on first down in that game than last year. Quote Link to comment

Tulane went 2-10 that year. You're totally right. I'm not pushing any panic buttons personally, and while I only posted that in response to somebody else's point about Saban/Bama, I'm happy to give proper credit where it's due, eat crow and be ecstatic if this season ends anything similar to Bama's year 2 under Saban. NOT SAYING HE IS NOT/WON'T BE A GREAT COACH. Last year, he had answers for it. Sat, it was the most apathetic offensive era since Frost came here IMO. Quote Link to comment

But, I also remember a trip to the red zone where, I think, he called three straight pass plays where 2AM had WRs wide open in the end zone at least twice and over threw them badly. The play calling could have been better. But, when Frost did open it up, the players didn't execute. Quote Link to comment
ActualCornHusker
One of the main issues i saw was Mills missing the hole several times. Hopefully he improves in that regard, but there were a few carries early on where he had a hole but ran into the pack instead 1 Quote Link to comment

I don’t know, but we called a lot more runs on first down in that game than last year. In the 2nd quarter it seemed like he was calling more short passing plays on 1st and 2nd down. We'd pick up a good chunk and soften the defense up. I know Frost said they went into this game with fewer plays to call, so maybe that contributed to the lack of change. Or maybe he could tell Martinez was off on his reads and game and rather than put him into positions to force it he just decided to give him easy reads and plays. Quote Link to comment
Husker in WI
Frost also mentioned USA had a lot of defensive changes the staff didn't really know about what of time. So seems like the staff thought they knew what to expect, planned specifically for that, and wouldn't /didn't adjust. Which is fine first game of the year against an inferior opponent, and I don't expect it to be the norm moving forward. They spent all offseason prepping a new defense, other teams on the schedule won't be able to make huge changes in a week, and hopefully it also reminded the staff to have more adjustments ready. I thought we were at the point they could call things not specifically in the game plan, not sure if that isn't true or if they didn't feel the need to do that. As people have pointed out, some of the calls were great and just not executed. Quote Link to comment
