Wyohusker56 says that coaches don't even plan for a backup kicker because the odds of them getting hurt are so infinitesimally small that literally no coach would even think about planning for a back up.  Why would we need another?

Are you asking me to argue someone else's point? Wouldn't it be better to address that with them?

The reply seemed to fit with the flow of the conversation and your assertion that a third kicker would be wasting a roster spot.

Jorgenson the 2nd stringer was injured too...people are forgetting it wasn't just the 1st string kicker. 

 

Usually is desperation mode when your 1st and 2nd string kickers go down with injuries. How rare is that to happen? I don't know how you spin this negatively whatsoever

My assertion is that quality third kickers are a luxury, not the norm. I doubt many teams have more than two kickers on scholarship. We appear to be in the neighborhood of roster management that most teams have.

 

We're down to our third kicker. It's highly unusual. Probably we'll give him a shot this weekend, but last weekend with the travel roster being smaller, he didn't make the trip.

 

But a guy could easily roll into Heins' ankle, thus we need to go searching for another body.

Yes agreed. It'd be interesting to see how many teams in the last 10 years had their first 2 kickers go down with injury at the same time. Maybe could count on 1 or 2 hands

That is interesting...I am trying to think if we practice two kickers (or more) and I think what we do/have done is at the start of the season we sort of find two guys that can kick and punt...we practice them both the first week...then after that we have our starters and the backups really don't practice it...

 

But in college, special teams is done different, (usually), the specialists come out at the start of practice, kick, punt a few times, then usually go in and lift (watch TV and eat snacks) and come back out at the end during specials.

 

Since they don't have a FT special teams coach, I suppose it makes sense that other guys were not practicing.
