The Bo Pelini Curse

Exactly....

There's such a small sample size of SF's work here, there's no real way to grade him on his performance

Hopefully he'll realize that you need a backup placekicker. For 4.5 million, I expected more and expected more playmakers for recruiting. Maybe he should have spent his December of 2017 recruiting instead of coaching his former team.

So while I don't want to call it a course per se, I would say there was a marked change in the program under Pelini after the A&M fiasco.  But you're dead on with the rest.  The program has become a lot like how a lot of folks mock Notre Dame- especially before Brian Kelly really turned things around.  There's a lot of hype due to the name but not so much on field success.

I don’t think he liked being told off by Perlman.   Frankly, I’m of the opinion had he won those CCG games in 2009 or 2010 he would have bolted for another program if he was offered.   Pelini didn’t like the fishbowl that is the Nebraska football coach.

I am going to respectfully disagree.

What kind of talent did you expect him to get with two recruiting classes?  This isn't NCAA13 where you're just going to get all the 5 star recruits you want.

He's an offensive guru and the only playmakers I see is Wandale and the other one is on trial for felony child porn charges.

What did Bama do in Saban year 2 after taking over from an absolute dumpster fire?

I would have to do some googling in terms of what he inherited for his offensive lines. Frost has recruited multiple four star skill players on offense.

I legitimately don't know what the comparison is in terms of what Saban had to work with on his lines. It's probably somewhat similar to cherry picking Gene Chizik's 2010 Auburn season.

Judging a coaches recruiting after two classes one that he had to sign players for just weeks after being hired is asinine. Also, the time he was "coaching his former team" him and his assistants were flying around the country to meet recruits at night and coaching by day. I'd like to see anyone on this board dedicate themselves to a job like that.

Also, these people who expect a team to have a backup kicker as good as their starter obviously don't watch football. Go ahead and name one team that has a backup kicker as good as their starter I'll wait. Half the teams in college don't even have a good starter. He had a back up walk on who didn't cut it. I am sure as hell glad they didn't waste another scholarship spot on this team for a back up kicker who wouldn't see the field except in the fluke instance the starter gets hurt.

I don't know about the lines, that'd take more to find. Here is what he inherited by class rankings though.

2006 class - 13th

2005 class - 16th

2004 class - 21st

2003 class - 41st

He then signed the 12th class.

 I don't think you're tracking...

This isn't 20+ years ago where the coaching staff was getting quality kids from NJ, Fla, Tx, Cal.

Since there are two threads discussing Solich and Bo and their firings they either did or didn’t deserve (they did) I’ll just say this.

When a coach/employee/player is let go, fired, or cut and it’s considered a mistake, usually the person in question is in high demand to be picked up by a peer.

Since his firing in 03, Solich has been at Ohio since 05. He’s never won the MAC once, and in a conference famous for coaches using it as a stepping stone or a transition to a higher profile gig, he’s never once been mentioned as a candidate for a job opening anywhere.

Since his firing, Pelini has been at Youngstown St. and once his inherited team graduated, Bo has struggled to keep a winning record after a playoff run in 2016 (sound familiar?)

And in this wild coaching carousel of the last few years. Bo’s name has never once come up as a potential candidate unless it was a joke.

Both men were ill suited for the spotlight a program like Nebraska presents.

And since it’s 2019, that’s pretty much that.

And yet still won 9 games.

Remind me how many seasons out of the last 18 are better than Bo's worst season here.

I mean, Mike Riley served up a pretty classic Bo season in 2016. Started well enough, lost to Wisconsin, got blown out by two name programs, and had an uninspired bowl loss to an sec team.

9-4, and not very inspiring.

People were right to not be thrilled with it in 2016 and they were right to want more from Pelini when he produced similar results.

Bo would probably excel best at the NFL level as a positional coach.    Let other guys handle personnel.   He could do X’s and O’s.

I like Bo a lot, but I agree.  I think that a high level DC is probably his sweet spot.  Unfortunately I think he probably has too much pride for this.

I would rather we lived through Solich's changes, and he was going through adjustments.  If he'd failed after another cycle of 4 years then I'd have been surprised.  I think his methods and knowledge and recruiting would have had us much better than now.   But every time I express that I hear a certain female voice (my wife) remind me of the AD thing.  So... yeah Bo should have stayed and perhaps things could have worked out personality wise.  I don't know.  Curse?   Okay.
