The mindset of my neighbor

I thought this would be an interesting discussion...didn't know if it should be in the Gun Control thread, Trump's America, Republican Utopia, or somewhere else, so I just started a new thread...

My next door neighbor posted this on his Facebook page last month. I am not his FB friend, but saw him ranting about socialism on one of the local FB group pages so I looked up his page and saw this, I was amazed that people actually think this way:

***

You can try to pitch as many arguments as you'd like in an attempt to justify Red Flag Laws. But they will be the end of all of your constitutional rights in one swoop.

"This s#!t. Tell me it won't happen:

Red Flag Laws. Here’s what will happen...

It’s a Sunday night and your family has all gone to bed. You let the dogs back in and lock the deadbolt like you do every night. All the lights are off now except a couple of night lights scattered throughout the house leaving that dim glow throughout your home. It’s bedtime and work and school are going to come early in the morning. You crawl in bed, kiss your wife and drift off to sleep being thankful for the air conditioning that allows you to pull that heavy quilt up over your shoulder despite the fact it’s still 85 degrees outside. A few hours pass...

0200 Monday morning and your wife taps your leg and says, “baby I heard something outside”. As you sit up in bed you hear the dog growling in the living room and you know something isn’t right. You grab that trusty ole 870 and head into the living room. Your wife grabs her 9mm and heads down the hall to the kids rooms just like you have rehearsed. “Good boy” you say as you enter the living room, trying to calm both the dog and your wife just as splinters fly across the room and the front door flys open. “Oh s#!t!” As you shoulder your weapon and send a load of 00 Buck across your living room and see the perpetrator fall in a heap. Before the “thank God” can even run across your brain, you see a second man coming in the door and you fire again. This time you hear the pop of your wife’s 9mm as she has joined in the fight. It has to be those damn meth heads from down in town! Just then you are consumed by a wall of bullets as you see multiple muzzle flashes from just outside the door and you realize something isn’t right. You turn to yell at your wife to “get down” just in time to see her take a load of buckshot to the face and her brain matter splatter the wall behind her. You feel the burning as 5.56 bullets Riddle your body. One clips your spine as you’re scrambling away and paralyzes your lower body. The last thing you see before you bleed out is a SWAT guy from your local PD holding your teenage daughter on the floor with a knee in her back as she screams and cry’s because she just watched her parents being murdered.

Why did this happen? You’re no criminal. You’re a Conservative and an honest family man. Your wife is a school teacher and your daughters are on honor roll. Why did this happen?

Well two days ago, you and your wife went down to welcome the new neighbors to the community. Your wife made them some of her “world famous” cookies and you invited them to church on Sunday. Later that afternoon, you got a friend request on Facebook from your new neighbor, which you gladly accepted. They seemed a little odd, but in the few minutes you talked they were pleasant enough. The next day while you and your family sat in church, your new neighbor scrolled through your Facebook profile. He saw that “Trump 2020” post and got infuriated. See, he’s a staunch liberal and he hates your kind. The next thing he sees are the hunting pictures you took last fall when your daughter bagged her first buck. Now he’s seething with fury because he is wholeheartedly against the “slaughter of innocent animals”. Next he sees your post from the last range day with your buddy and sees those scary black assault weapons on the table and that does it! He has to do something about the racist domestic terrorist living next door. He picks up the phone, calls the local Sheriffs Office and reports you as a threat under the new Red Flag law. The SO follows their SOP’s and conducts a no knock warrant because you have now been denied due process and you are considered guilty until proven innocent.

Now you, your lovely wife and two deputies have been killed for nothing. Your daughter will have absolute hell for the rest of her life. She will never be that successful person you dreamed for her to be because of the mental tragedy caused from seeing her parents murdered. The local news paper will report that you were killed after firing on and killing two deputies and that “over a thousand rounds of ammo and 22 guns were confiscated from your residence”.

Oh, those two deputies were just following orders. They left behind families as well and had served their community for over a decade. They didn’t know you were a stand-up guy with a great family. They weren’t allowed time to investigate things under due process. They were told you had threatened your neighbor and were out in the street waving an AR15 around.

This is the reality of Red Flag gun laws. Innocent people will lose their lives. Red Flag laws will be used for petty and vengeful reasons without merit."

Under the same Facebook post above, a friend had engaged in discussion:

FRIEND: When the red flag Law is made federal, it won’t be people we know knocking down our doors, it will be the ATF and FBI. Who don’t live in our neighborhood. They won’t care to kill you or your family!

NEIGHBOR: I suspect that the people I do know in my neighborhood wouldn't have an issue with it either.

FRIEND: I’m surprised the little bitches haven’t complained about the Airborne flag. Probably scared to death.

NEIGHBOR: I saw the hate in their eyes when I first flew Old Glory. They could complain all they'd like. I don't negotiate with commies.

I am friends with many folks in our neighborhood, and there is also one of those FB messenger groups where the neighborhood women exchange gossip, and I have never once heard anyone express any issues with his flag. I certainly don't have a problem with it. In fact, I have associated with liberals for most of my adult life and have never heard anyone, anywhere, complain about someone flying an American flag.

He and I actually get along quite well, by the way, albeit only occasional small talk and handshakes.

So I wanted to post about it here, just food for thought. How does someone develop these kinds of thoughts, and how many people out in America actually think this way?

That is nuts.  The paranoia is exactly the sort of example the “Red Flag” laws might consider concerning.  This would freak me out - my first thought is to talk to him but then you're going to see posts that detail

you as the scared bitch.  He knows he is on a public forum right?  He wants people to see and fight with him.

I will guarantee you that was written by the marketing arm of the NRA.

Notice a couple things.

A) Why would this happen to him? He’s a good conservative.

B) He was in church while the disgusting liberal was home combing through his Facebook page.

C) he flies the flag and everyone else hates it.

These are key hot button points.

Agreed. This is really suspicious.

How would he know anyone hates his flag?  He could "see the hate in their eyes." Whose eyes? How did he see them? If he saw them, why didn't he talk to them about the flag?

This seems like a "that happened" scenario. I have no doubt this was posted on someone's FB. I just have every doubt he had any kind of interaction with his librul neighbors.

I know there are obviously counter examples but I was thinking the other day, I actually know quite a few people who grew up living behind the iron curtain, and they’re all Democrats or agree with the Democrats. They lived in communist countries but don’t have the same fear of the Democrats ushering in socialism/communism that the Republicans do.

Well, I am his liberal neighbor. But we've never talked about politics at all. The house on the other side of his is rented by a few college students from China. We live in a red part of Ohio but in a college town, so we have a fair number of presumably liberal college professors on our street. He is actually more kind and fair to his Chinese neighbors than some of our more liberal neighbors, judging by the gossip that I read on the neighborhood messenger group.

Like I said, we get along well. We have talked some about his military service (combat paratrooper in Irag and Afghanistan, three purple hearts), which I truly respect and admire. Certainly no hate from me. We have otherwise avoided any other talk about guns, politics, or anything else. Our interactions have always been friendly and jovial. Despite our differences, I would trust him in a pinch, and hope he would think the same of me.

My kids and a couple of his kids play in the backyard together sometimes. But my children have told me that his kids are not allowed to mingle with Hillary voters (context: we had a Hillary sign in our yard in 2016, but this family moved into the neighborhood in 2017. The kids may have seen the sign in our garage at some point, or perhaps the one and only time the daughter was over to play dolls with my daughter, she might have seen an autographed picture of the Obamas in my son's room).

So I know he has spoken to at least one librul neighbor (me) who has shown nothing but friendliness to him. But it is disturbing to see such a reference to liberal neighbors in his Facebook post.

My family literally grew up in the situation you mention and they don't care about our party terms as in Dem/Rep...but they HATE and LOATHE socialism and communism.

My Bro-In-Law grew up in a communist country (left it pretty recently) and I have never heard him mention Dem/Rep but he f#&%ing hates communism.  I don't think he fears "it" happening in the states at all but it is safe to say that he is not a fan of that government.

Yeah, I think it is safe to say that he would be eager for an opportunity to fight. Last fall, our neighborhood had an issue with mail getting stolen out of mailboxes. There was a pattern of behavior around town, and a few arrests were finally made. While it was still going on, the neighborhood group was messaging each other about how to protect your mail, get lockable mailboxes, take stuff to the post office, etc. My neighbor was on the group talking about staking out the neighborhood at night with his guns so he could catch and confront the perps, and he was looking for volunteers to join him.

Hah!  I see this on the Nextdoor App all the time!

"I hope they try to break into my truck...I will introduce them to Smith and Wesson" . Okay super dork.

and

"We should start a neighborhood watch, citizens on patrol, I can make a sign up sheet" . Okay dork...I believe that was a Policy Academy sequel...Last I checked Bobcat Goldthwait doesn't live in our neighborhood.

Too many people have created their own false reality. It gets validated everyday on Facebook, social media, "news" stations with an agenda and by our President. Throw in the NRA and other lobby groups that create and fund the narrative and, well, this is what you get.

As an aside, I find it comical that even in an obvious NRA talking point story that innocent people get shot and killed by guns. Two cops, two innocent homeowners....you would think their version of a gun infested Utopia should be extremely safe with only criminals getting shot. Guess it doesn't matter to them as long as lots of people are getting shot.
