Yeesh. This thread.

Landlord may be the only one making any sense.

How does an apology work, when those who need to apologize, and those who deserve to be apologized too, are all dead?

Dude - the effects of years of abuse still resonates with todays minorities.  They deserve an apology.  We should all recognize it.

The last link is a report that is pretty good - looking at how the lack of housing opportunities in the 40's impacted ownership but also overall wealth, how the exclusion of some members of our country from social security (mostly farmers and domestic workers - mostly of color, the lack of a minimum wage for workers of color.  The impact of the GI Bill on minorities, the FHA discrimination, and the list goes on and on.

To say it's over and was done long ago is putting your head in the sand.

If you think slavery is the only reason for that wealth divide, we may be on the beach together....

Also, all those numbers seem astronomically high....

She literally was talking about other things that impacted the gap other than slavery, did you even read the post? And those numbers don't seem that high when you factor land/homes/all other assets.

I took it that she linked those reasons back to slavery. I was thinking of another factor that people pretend isn't involved. Culture.

 yea the culture of white people to systematically oppress people of color? Because that culture sets the stage for everything else.

So you are telling me redlining, no minimum wage for people of color and people of color being excluded from social security is their fault becuase of their culture? Lol at you.

Would you like to join us in 2019? I never said black weren't wronged decades/centuries ago. Most people's wealth (modest or lower) isn't inherited from a previous generation, but built over their own lives and careers. The opportunity to build your own wealth is there for everybody in 2019. There's no disputing that.

I'd like to see you prove that one because I'd venture to guess most wealth is passed down.

History built today. Money is still power today and all of the power belongs to white people because guess what? They systematically oppressed people. To say the slate is clean because its 2019 is extremely niave.  Also if recent years have proven anything its that racism is alive and well. This isn't a racial utopia, people of color are still at a disadvantage.

Power belongs to a handful of white people.... There are  10's of millions of white people that are no better off than poor black people.

You really think *most* (think what that word means) white peoples' money comes from previous generations? ! Breaking News !, Most white people don't have much money either!

Breaking news white people in power has greatly benefited white people. You say white people are no better off but that is false. White people havent been demonized for decades. White people haven't been targeted by hate crimes and discriminatory policing. White people didn't feel the effects of redlining which directly relates to education nearly as harshly as people of color. People want to talk about the black family, but thats not really a fair discussion when fathers have been being killed or wrongly imprisoned for centuries. To say that its 2019 and its fair for everyone is a slap in the face.

You think inner-city blacks have it any worse than whites in, say, rural Appalachia?

The "black family" discussion is absolutely fair, self accountability is a huge part of that discussion as well. Even if you feel the criminal justice system is unbalanced, nobody makes you commit crimes.

Yes, I do.

What about people who go to prison who didn't commit a crime but were unjustly imprisoned? Generations of fathers being wrongfully taken from their families, combined with social demonization, combined with systematic economic oppression would cause any population to struggle in a major way.
