Year 2 Regression Under Frost

I think the point is that you need 11 guys on every play doing  a pretty good job more than one guy doing an incredible job.

Ideally you have both.

Likewise you can have a team stacked with Jimmies and Joes, but if it's also loaded with primadonnas, fragile egos, little unity, and lazy schemes, they can get beat by average talent, motivation and strategy. Happens every Saturday and Sunday.

I think we have a crew(players) led by a few cats (other players) on the team who don't believe and a sprinkling of young stars who do believe.

I wrote a paragraph and erased it because I think you covered everything.

Bend don’t break? Tell that to Bama, Ohio state, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, penn state, Iowa, on and on. There are a lot of gritty hard nosed teams out there playing solid D. Not allowing 35 a game.

There are currently 21 teams allowing less than 20 points per game.

I looked at the Top 20 defensive teams and 5 are not Power 5 teams and when 5 of the top 12 are Big 10 teams that have played Iowa, Northwestern,Purdue, Illinois, and us already in some combo already, that doesn't hold any water.  Schedule driven stats.  Lets look at the end of the year who is in the top 20.  Were allowing 29 points per game right now.

Florida St is open, would Frost and CO consider?

Frost, was the hottest coach on the market in 2017, going undefeated and beating Auburn in the Peach bowl.  Now suddenly he has completely forgotten how to coach?  Everyone just needs to RELAX!!!  To the naysayers on this board, I would like to say Frost will get his full 7 years at the helm.  Just look at Florida St.,  Willie Taggert gets less than 2 years and now they are starting at ground zero again with at least another 2 recruiting years bailing on them.  Let's face it, we don't have the seasoned horses to complete, particularly at linebacker and on the O-Line.   I like most are disappointed at the execution, but this improve with years in the system.  Long story short, I'd rather stick with a coach and staff the bleeds Husker red, than jump back into perpetual rebuilding and the latest flavor of the month coach.

I do not know too many calling on Frost to leave...but his assistants should be considered if they are doing worse in year 2 than year 1. Chin is a prime example of a guy who has never led a stout defense, and there is no promise that he will suddenly get it figured out in 2020 which will be his 5th year as a DC.

Frost is an offensive guy and needs help on the defensive side. If he does not feel Chin is the long term answer, why struggle through another year of it?

I also agree that Verduzco has Martinez doing too much thinking. Going through his progressions, his check-downs, etc. before making a decision. Last year it was more of Martinez relying on his athleticism and his own natural instincts. This year it's like he's going through all the steps of a process before he is actually able to do anything, because that's what he's being coached to do. Because of that, it makes him appear to be tentative and by the time he decides what he wants to do, the play has often broken down and is no longer effective. A few times yesterday I heard the commentators mention that "had he thrown it a second or two earlier..." Yeah, that's because he was too busy going through all of his progressions.

Maybe he doesn’t process them as quickly as is needed. He needs to be benched. His athleticism has eroded so now you get a slower to process, slower overall QB.

He is not the guy.

This is a great point - Frost does care more than anyone. He will figure it out. A lot of OTJ learning right now, a bit too much, but he’s going to figure it out. I do not see some assistance along for the ride. He’ll need help.

We can talk this to death, but hearing Brees talk to the Boilermakers in the locker room really makes you wonder. Telling players to go all out on each play, cause that one play can mean a difference in the game result.

It is hard to find one player on the huskers that is giving their all on every play.  They are standing around waiting for a teammate to do something. They were waiting for someone to make a play on Purdue's last drive.

I just don't know how we have managed to end up with a roster of players for years now that seem to practice well and say all the right things,  but come game time look like a bunch of guys whose parents signed them up for a sport they don't want to play.  Practice sucks and the game is supposed to be fun so why is no one enjoying playing the game.

I agree that Frost should be given time; however, I also think that he should prove that he's willing to make changes for the betterment of the team. Right now it's obvious to pretty much everyone that Chinander ain't gonna cut it.

As far as Martinez, I also don't believe that he just suddenly doesn't have it anymore. A kid just doesn't lose his natural talents like that. They need to let him rely more on his natural ability/instincts and stop making him overanalyze and overprocess things before he's allowed to make a decision. Verduzco just needs to take a step back. If you have an open receiver, throw it... not, "I see an open guy, but wait, let me go through all my progressions to see if anyone else is open... nope, let me go back to that first guy who was open... dang, now he's covered, I guess I'll run"

Honest question on AM.  Is it possible he did so well last year relying on his natural athleticism and talent and year 2 we are seeing the results of Verduzco and his coaching?  Is he really the QB whisperer or did we believe it because Frost said it?  I never heard of the guy prior to Frost coming here.  Seems like of he was that hot, he'd be all over the place..... Odd that he has regressed so much.

I also think that teams have figured out our O and D.  Per Bell's quote after the game they watched UCF film.....

I considered this too but Vedral and McCaffrey looked great and they’re also coached by him. I guess the same argument could be made for McCaffrey relying on his instincts and athleticism this year but sometimes AM looks great and then the next play he makes a costly mistake - I just think it’s a mental block (hopefully).

I have no idea.  Good point on Vedral.  Maybe Vedral's "natural abilities" are more in line with Verduzco's methods?  I have no idea.  Just wish it was something that could be identified and fixed.  Not just the sophomore jinx....He just seems timid and unsure. Playing "slow" and not to get hurt.

Milton seemed to thrive as well
