What defensive unit is the weakest link?

Recommended Posts

BTW, the defense's weakest link is at LB by far.  People looking for DL play makers in a 3-4 is just not reasonable.  Unless you've got someone like Suh (or Clemson/Bama's 5* D-line studs), the most you can expect from your 3 DLs is to eat up blockers hold their ground and perhaps occasionally beat their block(s) and pick up a TFL or sack. LBs need to either shoot gaps like maniacs or cover.  Our LBs don't do either very well.

Make it 5 million.  Money well spent!

I'm not arguing that Aranda might have some great ideas, but he's also got the studs and speed to implement those great ideas.  You can bring in the greatest race horse trainer in the world, but he's not going to turn a Clydesdale into the next Kentucky derby champion.

Maybe he would attract a few race horses in training.  He made Wisconsin Clydesdales look sexy.

Watching Wisconsin you can tell the engineer behind their 3-4 is Dave Aranda. Just like you can tell the engineer behind our 3-4 is Don Pellum. Same defense, soooooooo differently executed.

Oregon demoted Pellum back to LB-coach after two unimpressive seasons at DC. Chin copied this scheme mainly because his experience was rather limited and this was the D he knew enough to run. Granted Pellum's scheme was similar to Aliotti's and that guy did OK with it but Chin learned primarily from the DC that screwed the pooch.  I think Chin would be fine if he had learned more under better defensive coaches. But instead of being groomed properly he became a DC after just two years as a FBS position-coach on a meh defense.
