Great interview with Jason Peter. Explains the defense pressure problems and what he sees as the problem. Worth the listen.

It was a good listen.

The staff is definitely hitting the recruiting trail hard for the defensive line and pass rush.

I think you guys are creating a narrative here.  Let me explain.

Randy Gregory was part of the 2014 defense...and our defense this year was very close in sacks and TFLs to the 2014 defense...and in 2014 they played an extra game (13).

Keep in mind, this years defense had more sacks and TFLs than any since 2014.

2019 Sacks:  27

2014 Sacks:  29

In fact, we only had 4 less sacks than the often lauded last good defense (2010 defense which had 2 more games playing 14).

We had 73 tackles for loss (TFLs)...also the most since 2014 when they had 80...once again, they had an extra game so we're pretty close.

So, as you can see, you guys are creating a narrative.  We have guys getting in for sacks and TFLs...just not how you would like them to (that is one or two guys who are major threats).

Interestingly enough, it looks like the 2014 and this years defense would be fairly comparable:

2014:

Yards Per Play:  5.37

Yards Per Game:  383.7

2019:

Yards Per Play:  5.61

Yards Per Game:  388.8

If Chinander's defense can

  • start generating a pass rush with his front four alone
  • shore up linebacker play and defensive alignment issues in the front 7
  • have the man defenders become lockdown in man assignments
  • play zone assignment football better
  • Generate more takeaways

Then he may be in the ball park.  But that "get off the field on 3rd down" issue has to be fixed, badly.

Had to do some looking on this one.  Lends credibility to my killing a chicken at the 50 yard line:

Nebraska's historical rankings in the country - turnovers:

2009: 33rd

2010: 71st

2011: 95th

2012: 75th

2013: 102nd

2014: 43rd

2015: 107th

2016: 69th

2017: 115th

2018: 44th

2019: 25th

I went back 10 years.  Then I went back even further.

2003:  SECOND IN THE COUNTRY in turnover margin

What else happened in Nebraska Football, 2003???

Meet me after dark on the 50.  Bring the chicken.

I hate to break this to you...

Also, a lot of that boils down to "play better." Which we all can agree on at least!

Having a couple pass rushers would help bullet points three and five

I don''t know exactly why, but I always enjoy hearing Jason Peter's take on the Huskers.  He makes some good points here.

So this year's defense is the best we've had as far as creating turnovers in over a decade, and better than 2009-2010, and better than last year?

Well that's cause for some optimism.

It is surprising to me.

But digging into the numbers we caused 9 turnovers in the 3 non-conference games (3/game) and then 12 turnovers in conference play (1.3/game). And I believe we went 6 games in a row in the middle of the season without recovering a fumble.

And the difference between 2018 and 2019 was 1 additional turnover (21 vs 20).

I believe Jason has a lot of respect for Frost paying his dues when transferring to Nebraska as a player.

Jason is a regular at practice and I think he sees firsthand the issues Frost refers to.

Listening to Dr Rob is good too.
