To expound on the LSU stories, word is former Nebraska coach Bill Busch - also a former player at Nebraska Wesleyan and current LSU safeties coach who recruits California JUCOs for the Tigers - really wanted Mauga but they were full at LB.  So he reached out to Barrett Ruud and told him we should look at Mauga.

Finding Mauga late and getting in the door with Greene meant we didn't have a spot for Hodge.

Wow, thanks for the update Mav! It is crazy how some guys on the LSU staff have ties to Nebraska. They have Mickey Joseph, Corey Raymond, and Bill Busch.

Goes to show playing nice and not using negative recruiting can be beneficial. Plus Nebraska people will always love themselves some Nebraska.

Throw in the fact that LSU probably didn’t want to see him land in another SEC school, Busch and other LSU coaches were glad to see Mauga end up at NU.

The OWH guys had an interesting story about Mauga. They said he was all-in on San Diego State, and then NU came in late. The son didn’t know anything about NU, but the father was a big football fan and JUCO coach in CA, and knew the tradition of NU. They visited NU and were obviously blown away. At the end of the visit, the father became choked up because after not being in his son’s life for 12 years, and reconnecting while at JUCO, the father realized he may not be able to see his son play regularly, if the son went to NU. But, they told the son it was his decision and the son obviously signed with NU.  The father realized NU was a better opportunity, and didn’t try to stand in his son’s way.

This story gets to the challenge of recruiting places like FL, GA, CA, etc. NU is going into these areas and needing to find kids who are willing to get out of the area, but also willing to really “get away”. It’s easy for FL kids to go to an ACC or SEC school outside the state, because those schools comes back to or near FL on a regular basis. NU rarely plays in the south, but is going into those areas to try and find kids. That is where the coaches developing these relationships is key. Finding what makes those kids tick and the motivation for the kids are what makes great recruiters.
