MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK: SHOULD COACH FROST HAND OFF PLAY CALLING?
BY SQUAREOFFS ON 1/20/2020

There were some big coaching changes in Husker land this past week. Coach Scott Frost let go of offensive coordinator and receivers coach Troy Walters, replacing him with Matt Lubick, who Frost worked with at Oregon. Lubick spent the last year out of football but worked as a consultant for Frost during that time. Frost also gave offensive line coach Greg Austin the new title of “run game coordinator”.

No word on any changes to Coach Frost continuing to be the Husker play caller. Frost is one of the few Power 5 head coaches who also call the offensive plays. Doing so he follows the model set by Tom Osborne and by Chip Kelly, who Frost and Lubick worked for at Oregon...   LINK

There should be a real time Madden screen up for every fan to select plays during the game and the team should have to run whatever play gets selected the most by Husker fans.

And this should apply also defense, blitzes and the lineup.

The only problem will be getting those 46 Army guys and 71 Nebraska guys on the field.

I agree to a point........but he was not exceptional last season. He had some really stupid play calling.

Idc what he called last year, between the oline sucking it up until the last couple weeks and AMarts inability to put touch on a pass, nothing he called was going to work. It’ll be better in 2020, no doubt about it

Yes...let the new guy call plays in game, not design the game plan.  The new guy couldn’t be any worse than Frost was this past season.  If he is terrible Frost can take back over and call screen pass after screen pass.

Selection 2 was the closest, but geez "Run the Damn Ball?"  The Huskers were 111th out of 130 in terms of pass:run ratio.  39:61 pass:run ratio  Last year was 48:52 pass:run.

Ohio State was 105 (40% pass), Oklahoma 95th (41.6%), Clemson 60th (47.5%), LSU 20% (54%) for comparison.

Minnesota was 115% (39.9%) and Wisconsin was 118th (37.9%)

The problem is not insufficient running.  The problem is inadequate line play, inadequate running back depth and inadequate WR development, leading to less decisive and less effective QB play.  It is hard to call plays when nothing is working well.  Fix some of the execution issues and I bet the play calling looks a lot better.

These coaches are all making obscenely high salaries for a job that last about 8 months out of a year in many ways.  They have plenty of time to plan ahead for nearly 8 months before each season.   If they know their job - I should sure think so as their professionals with resumes and interviews to match - they can handle it.  Good grief - Devaney and TO put together well oiled machine like teams with more diverse schemes and played over 100 guys in half the games.  Their teams could block, tackle, punt and pass when the needed arose, cover and return kicks and did so with pride and effort galore.  And did so with fewer coaches and dam few extra helpers.  If these guys know their jobs, they’d be at work less than half the year really.  Frost spends time with media but compared to the past, much less it seems.

Works eight months out of the year?  Wut??  Between recruiting, summer camp, fall camp, watching film, game planning, managing staff, more recruiting, and winter testingI doubt if Scott Frost takes 15 days off a year.
