This might be an unpopular opinion, but...

I’m not for or opposed to legalized gambling in Nebraska. I’ve got no dog in the fight. I understand the thought the state is losing out on revenue and also understand that there are social costs involved with gambling. I’ve made quite a few trips to the Casinos in Blackhawk and Central City CO as well as some trips to Vegas and even the boats in Council Bluffs. I would say the majority of the people regularly frequenting these casinos are by and large not the type of people that should be losing money gambling. If you don’t have a window to throw it out of, you probably have no business pissing in that pot.

The argument to begin legalized gambling is always the unbelievable revenue it will generate and all the social programs it will fund. From my armchair it seems to be not much more than a wash. I don’t recall any huge jumps in Colorado revenue, at least none that didn’t get sucked up and all but lost within the budget. I have seen areas and neighborhoods near casinos, before and after, and I am not impressed with the blight and decay they seem to generate. I like to play blackjack, pai gow, craps, let it ride, other board games and the occasional slot machine. I used to gamble, a lot, on football. Far be it from me to tell anyone else what to do but I would not want legalized gambling anywhere near where I live. It’s good at least an hour away though.

Straw man /ˌstrô ˈman/ noun 1. an intentionally misrepresented proposition that is set up because it is easier to defeat than an opponent's real argument.

My argument is that the social cost of gambling exceeds the revenue it brings. When that argument is met with "But alcohol and tobacco!" or insinuating things that I didn't say, those are quite literally the definition of a straw man. Cute meme though.

All counter points are not straw men. Nor are all analogies.
